TRUE CRIME: The Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short & George Hodel

TRUE CRIME: The Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short & George Hodel

Did a Hollywood doctor with an IQ of 186 kill Elizabeth Short, and did his own son, an LAPD homicide detective, solve the case?

Trigger warning: a graphic description of how Elizabeth Short’s body was found (about 5:51 to 7:30), the sexual abuse of a child and an alleged attempted rape of a teenager (about 14:37 to 16:00, and 23:47), plus discussion of sex work and police corruption.

The Black Dahlia is still one of the most notorious unsolved murders in American history. We start with Los Angeles in the 1940s: a corrupt LAPD, a hidden world of “pleasure girls,” and a press that turned a 22-year-old aspiring actor into a caricature. Then we follow Steve Hodel, a retired LAPD homicide detective who found two photographs in his late father’s album and spent years building a case that his father, Dr. George Hodel, killed Elizabeth Short. Plus James Ellroy, Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia, and why Elizabeth still deserves a better film.

Therapists Shannon and Cathy look at what the staging of the body suggests about the killer, how the police and the press sexualized and smeared the victim, the ritual, organization and narcissism in the man his own son believes did it, and the visceral “chill” people describe around psychopaths, and why that feeling is not proof.

Covered in this episode:

  • Los Angeles in the 1940s: LAPD corruption and John Buntin’s book L.A. Noir
  • Elizabeth Short, the young woman behind the Black Dahlia name
  • What the crime scene suggests about the killer
  • Steve Hodel and his case against his father
  • Dr. George Hodel: his house, his clout, and his daughter Tamar
  • The Cleveland Torso Killer theory
  • Michelle Phillips and the “chill” around psychopaths
  • James Ellroy, L.A. Confidential and The Black Dahlia (2006)
  • Why Elizabeth Short deserves a better film

Clinical themes: victim blaming and the sexualization of victims, ritual and organized offending, narcissism and power, institutional corruption, intuition versus evidence, obsession in true crime investigators.

Corrections and updates: The Black Dahlia murder (January 1947) came more than twenty years before the Zodiac killings, not after them. George Hodel was tried in 1949 on charges of incest and child molestation involving his daughter Tamar, then 14, and was acquitted. The case was never officially closed; it remains unsolved. Years later, cadaver dogs searched George Hodel’s former home, the Sowden House; the results were disputed and no remains were recovered there. Steve Hodel’s book Black Dahlia Avenger came out in 2003, three years before De Palma’s film. James Ellroy’s own mother was murdered in 1958, and that case shaped his novel The Black Dahlia (1987), which De Palma adapted; L.A. Confidential is a later novel in the same series, and the 1997 film was directed by Curtis Hanson.
