1070: Squatters | Skeptical Sunday

Scared of squatters taking your home? Nick Pell brings perspective to what the media tells us is a "growing crisis" on this week's Skeptical Sunday!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:
  • Squatting occurs when people occupy a property without legal right or permission, often in vacant homes or rental properties. While they may create fake leases or documentation to appear legitimate, they are distinct from legal tenants who have stopped paying rent or are being evicted.
  • Most squatting cases become complex civil matters rather than criminal ones because squatters often create fake leases and establish utility bills in their names, making it difficult for police to immediately remove them.
  • The current housing situation contributes to squatting — average rent has increased 13.7% year over year since 1980, while wages have only grown 0.2% year over year since the early 1970s, making housing increasingly unaffordable for many.
  • Changes to squatting laws need careful consideration, as overly strict laws could potentially be weaponized against legitimate occupants (such as domestic abuse victims) or lead to frivolous claims against legitimate tenants.
  • Property owners can protect themselves by regularly checking on their properties, maintaining good documentation of ownership and occupancy, and quickly establishing a paper trail with authorities if issues arise. Being proactive rather than reactive is the best defense against potential squatting situations.

280: Sarah Hill | This Is Your Brain on Birth Control

Dr. Sarah Hill (@sarahehillphd) is a leading researcher in the dynamic and rapidly expanding field of evolutionary psychology, and the author of This Is Your Brain on Birth Control: The Surprising Science of Women, Hormones, and the Law of Unintended Consequences. What We Discuss with Dr. Sarah Hill: How hormonal birth control affects women -- and the world around them -- in ways we are just now beginning to understand. Why a woman will be attracted to a certain partner while taking hormonal birth control -- and the problems this could cause for a relationship when she stops taking it. On a hormonal contraceptive, a woman is twice as likely to have attempted suicide as a woman who was not on a hormonal contraceptive. Why, in spite of its drawbacks, Sarah credits the pill to her own ability to achieve a doctorate and career success. Why these new findings should be a rallying cry for women to demand more information from science about how their bodies and brains work and to advocate for better research. And much more... 279: Dennis Quaid | Sharks, a Bear, and a Banjo

Dennis Quaid has been a Hollywood leading man for decades, fronts a band called The Sharks, and now stars in a new scripted musical podcast called Bear and a Banjo. What We Discuss with Dennis Quaid: Whether or not getting rejected for a coveted job in Hollywood ever gets easier -- even when you've been getting cast for decades. Why Dennis considers fear his greatest motivator -- and what this indicates to him when he feels it upon being offered a role. The hardest place to get respect, the greatest things our kids teach us, and where dad jokes go to die. Listening versus improvising, and how Dennis brings his characters to life without strictly memorizing his lines before arriving on set. Accents, biographical misinformation, and how learning to play a real-life astronaut led to Dennis learning how to fly real-life planes. And much more... 278: My Mother Lied About Our Father's Death | Feedback Friday

278: My Mother Lied About Our Father's Death | Feedback Friday

When you were kids, you and your brother moved to the other side of the country with your mother and stepfather not long after your parents divorced. You never saw your father again, and believed your mother when she said that he and his mother -- your grandmother -- had died. Fast forward to now. You and your brother are adults, and he's got a bombshell to drop: your grandmother is still alive, and your father only recently passed away. Feeling betrayed, you've pieced together your mother and stepfather's systematic strategy to estrange you from your dad's side of the family (who, by the way, tried to find you over that time without success) -- and you're angry. You feel robbed of the time you could have spent with them, and you're wondering how you should raise the issue with your mother -- or if you should. This is obviously a sensitive situation, but we'll do our best to help you with this and more on the latest Feedback Friday. And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason DeFillippo (@jpdef) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/278. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Interested in doing some prison time with Jordan next February? It's filling up fast; reach out to prison@jordanharbinger.com for details! When you have to cover for your kid's friend's expenses on a movie and pizza night because his mom neglected to provide him with any cash, is it wrong for you to expect his mother to recompensate you for those expenses even though she works two jobs and says you look like you can afford it? Your 80-year-old grandmother insists on bringing your bedridden and nonverbal father home instead of putting him in a place where he can get the constant care he needs. Putting your grandmother's strong will aside, what's the most responsible call to make here? As kids, you and your brother moved across the country with your mom when your parents divorced. Until recently, you never saw your dad's side of the family again because, your brother recently discovered, your mom lied about your father and your grandmother's deaths. How do you confront your mother -- or should you? You have a serious case of wanderlust. You have no debt, no children, and above average savings. But your friends and family look at you like you're insane whenever you mention leaving a job you love in order to travel. You know that the amazing experiences will be worth it, but can't help but wonder: are you crazy? You work in an incredibly cutthroat sales company where only 10%-15% of employees hired retain their employment, and you're in that top 15%. But you don't love your job and only stick around because you've got the "golden handcuffs" to keep you tethered. You're an underperforming... 277: Neil Pasricha | You Are Awesome

Neil Pasricha (@neilpasricha) is a New York Times bestselling author of five books including The Book of Awesome, The Happiness Equation, and his latest, You Are Awesome: How to Navigate Change, Wrestle with Failure, and Live an Intentional Life. What We Discuss with Neil Pasricha: Why anxiety is at an all-time high when we live in an age of relative ease compared to what our ancestors (and even recent generations) endured.  Why you need to be prepared — and willing — to lose more if you want to win more from what life has to offer. How to set up incredibly productive untouchable days where you're basically unplugged and unreachable — even when you have bosses and significant others who may be resistant to the idea. How to use the Saturday morning test to brainstorm new skills, adventures, and personal improvements you'd like to implement. A failure budget you can use to try new things, fail, and rejoin the fray — enhanced by the experience, but with relatively few scrapes and bruises. James Stavridis (@stavridisj) is a retired United States Navy admiral, operating executive with The Carlyle Group, and author. His latest book, Sailing True North: Ten Admirals and the Voyage of Character, is out now. What We Discuss with James Stavridis: What Admiral Stavridis means when he says we're "overweight in thinking about leadership and underweight in thinking about character." Why creativity and innovation are important for leaders -- and the roadblocks that tend to smother these qualities as we achieve in our lives and careers. Principles followed when top brass make decisions that put people in harm's way. The winners and losers in the recent decision to pull US troops from Syria and what this means for our former allies in the region. Meditations on single malt scotch whisky and the dangers of bringing alcohol to sea on a US Navy ship. And much more... 275: The Case of the Mysterious Hotel Panties | Feedback Friday

275: The Case of the Mysterious Hotel Panties | Feedback Friday

Your fiance travels and stays in hotels at different locations every week for work. The other day, you found black Victoria's Secret panties in your laundry. The thing it, you don't wear Victoria's Secret. So you approached him and said, "I need help understanding how this is in our belongings." He said this is a truly unfortunate situation because he doesn't know how it got there. You closely watched him for any signs that would alarm you as hints of lying. You found none. Is there any surefire way to know if a significant other is cheating beyond what amounts to circumstantial evidence? We'll try to unlock this and more on the latest Feedback Friday! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/275. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Interested in doing some prison time with Jordan next February? It's filling up fast; reach out to prison@jordanharbinger.com for details! A mysterious pair of panties that don't belong to you showed up in your laundry after your fiance returned from a business trip. He says he has no idea how they got there. Is there a surefire way to tell if he's been cheating and lying? You're a single dad who shares equal custody of a five-year-old son. His mom and new husband have offered the option to stay in a trailer on their property. You all get along great and this would be convenient for everyone, but is it an appropriate arrangement? As a leader in the workplace, you helped someone you thought was an amazing employee get promoted. Now you find that this person is mocking you behind your back and taking sick days once a month. You went to bat for this person and you feel betrayed. What now? You've been using techniques in Six-Minute Networking for talking to strangers, but what can you do when people aggressively try to shut down a conversation? Should you just call it a loss, cut bait, and move on, or try to break the dam a different way? You broke up with your girlfriend of four years because she started having feelings for another woman. Neither of you want this, but you're not able to continue loving her and only her knowing that she doesn't love you and only you back. Where do you go from here? You're worried that your significant other's negativity is rubbing off on you; your social life is suffering and you haven't felt like yourself lately. Even though you still care about them, you feel breaking up is the best way to give them the time and space they need. But how? You just started a new career. You want to start off strongly, but you already feel intimidated and think perhaps you have a little imposter syndrome. What can... His book Aiming High: How a Prominent Sports and Celebrity Agent Hit Bottom at the Top is out now.[Featured photo by Ryan Hartford of Ecliptic Media] What We Discuss with Darren Prince: How Darren was making multiple six figures by the time he was old enough to drive.  What got Darren started on a 24-year journey of addiction and how he found the exit to a recovery that's been going on for 11 years strong now. What it's like to go drinking with Dennis Rodman and rely on him to be the responsible one when it's time to wake up and go to work the next morning. Scott Adams (@ScottAdamsSays) is the creator of comic strip Dilbert, a talent stacker extraordinaire, and bestselling author. His latest book, Loserthink: How Untrained Brains Are Ruining America, is out now. What We Discuss with Scott Adams: Why the term “loserthink” isn't about being uninformed — it's about unproductive thinking. Mental models we use that sometimes fail us, and thinking traps that we fall into when we're looking to interpret communication, evaluate facts or evidence, and form opinions. How to evaluate fake news and see why the business models of many media outlets have been redesigned to keep us engaged at the expense of accuracy and truth. When and how to dial down our ego so we can clarify our thinking, and also when and how we can use our ego as a tool to move forward. Ways to evaluate and poke holes in bad arguments, and strengthen our own methods of thinking and arguing.
