Mythbusting: Are We Losing Fertilizer to Atmosphere and Leaching?

Here is a statement that I read on the internet recently, "...while fertilizers make crops grow better and faster, half of the fixed nitrogen we add is lost. Imagine that--we lose the equivalent of 12 million nitrogen elephants (~165 billion pounds) every year"
