The Regressives | When Unions Sell Out Their Members

New York City’s guaranteed medical coverage for every active and retired city worker has served as a major selling point over the past 57 years for people who would otherwise choose jobs with higher wages and lower stress. In a city where over 70,000 retirees survive on pensions of less than $1,500 a month, retired or disabled workers have relied upon the city’s promise to cover 100% of their medical expenses through Medicare and Medicare supplemental insurance. But in 2021, then-Mayor Bill de Blasio made a pact with public sector unions to switch retirees from their public Medicare supplemental insurance to a privatized Medicare Advantage plan. Cited as a way to save the city hundreds of millions of dollars annually, the move meant that nearly a quarter of a million retired New York City employees — people who have risked their lives for fellow New Yorkers as firefighters, police officers, nurses, and teachers — would no longer be able to access effective or essential healthcare. City retirees have sued the city to keep their current coverage. Attorney Jake Gardener, counsel to the retirees, sat down with Ravi to discuss the case, the politics behind the city’s relationship with its unions, and why preserving access to Medicare for current and future retirees in New York is essential, not just for New York City, but people all over the country. Trump’s Trade Gamble

Trump’s Trade Gamble

Is America’s place in the world at a crossroads? The New York Times’ Michael D. Shear returns to unpack the first two weeks of Trump's second term and the domestic and international response to an emboldened executive branch wielding unprecedented power. Ravi and Michael first review the administration’s high-stakes opening moves, from sweeping tariffs to an immigration crackdown, and discuss how a GOP-controlled Congress could enable some of Trump’s most aggressive policies yet. They also examine the Biden administration’s final days and the evolving dynamic between Trump and Obama. Finally, they turn to the international fallout: Mexico has already deployed troops, Canada is preparing economic retaliation, and China is purported to be weighing its response to an economic showdown, all while Europe braces for its own clash with Washington. Is this a strategic reindustrialization effort or a political gamble with global consequences? With world leaders recalibrating their approach to a more focused and forceful Trump, Ravi and Michael discuss whether we’ve entered a new era of uncertainty. Trump's Edu Plans, Reform Wars, Future of Teaching

Trump's Edu Plans, Reform Wars, Future of Teaching

Ravi sits down with New York Times education reporter and bestselling author Dana Goldstein to unpack the Trump administration’s early moves on education policy. They begin by examining the administration’s immigration agenda, its potential impact on the 700,000+ undocumented school-age children in the U.S., and why there’s still much to learn about how policy changes could be enforced. They then explore the tension between the administration’s stated goals of reducing federal involvement in education and its ambitious plans for a “patriotic curriculum” and increased school oversight. Dana also shares insights into the state of teaching and how burnout, pay disparities, and housing challenges have reshaped the profession. Finally, Ravi and Dana discuss emerging educational trends, including new school choice initiatives and a renewed focus on literacy curricula, how they’re influencing classrooms nationwide, and what they suggest about the future of American education.
