Senator Leahy (D. Of Vermont) has announced he will not seek another reelection to the U.S. Senate

Senator Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont has announced he will not be running for a ninth term in the United States Senate next year. So what does that mean exactly? This means his open Senate seat for Vermont opens up the way for a new Democrat or Republican to represent the state of Vermont in the U.S. Senate for a six year term. Also Senator Leahy is the current President Pro Tempore of the Senate. To which he leads the Senate whenever the Vice President is not present in the chamber and in other circumstances. President Pro Tempore is the third person in the presidential line of succession after the Speaker of the House. Essentially, this elected position of the Senate is very important to the Senate functions and the Presidential line of succession as well as Vice Presidential duties. Leahy was first elected to the Senate in 1974 during the time of Watergate scandal and the Nixon presidency. This Senator has served from the age of thirty-four to when he retires from the Senate in 2022 or 2023 ; which he will be 82 years old.
