Episode 34 - Health Literacy with Dr. Joe Schwarcz and Celebrating International Volunteer Day!

On this month's episode, we kick off season six with a bang! We discuss the importance of building our Health Literacy with plain language with Dr. Joe (and Science Literacy with Magic!) + celebrate International Volunteer Day by discussing the importance of volunteer advocacy on behalf of nonprofit organizations in Canada.

We have special guests:

  • Karen Ball president & CEO of CCVO the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations
  • Dr Joe Schwarcz director of the McGill University Office for Science and Society

Our first guest is Karen Ball from CCVO the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations. Karen’s work focuses on innovative communities and systems to support healthy nonprofit operations and providing expertise to organizations wishing to build deep and meaningful connections with their communities of stakeholders and supporters.
In this interview, we got to celebrate International Volunteers Day by discussing the advocacy work Karen and CCVO do on behalf of non-profit organizations in Alberta, and we learn how (now more than ever before!) important it is for the nonprofit sector to remain a priority across the Canadian Provinces, if Canada wants to rebuild successfully, especially during and after this pandemic. Check out their blog to find out more about their research into how nonprofits are adapting through COVID. Also mentioned in the interview is Calgary Read's BIG book sale.

You may have seen Dr Joe Schwarcz via the McGill Office for Science and Society or TED YouTube channel or even listened to the Dr Joe Show on iHeart radio! Dr Joe is the Director of the McGill University Office for Science and Society. Their mandate is to make Sense of Nonsense!
Chris got the chance to delve into Dr Joe’s history of him growing up in Hungary before immigrating to Canada, how Magic started it all, and what motivates Dr Joe to use simple plain language in helping the general public understand science more clearly If you want to hear Dr. Joe answering questions about covid check out LQ’s webinar.
