Episode 39: Self-Reliant Living With Kris Bordessa

We live in a time when you can get just about anything you want with just a few taps on your phone. On the one hand, it's amazing how easy it is. On the other, have we lost out on some basic skills that humans had been using for generations?

Over the last few decades life has gotten busier. In two parent households you have both parents working leaving them less time to cook dinners and share recipes. In single parent homes you end up with a parent likely working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Ease and accessibility are key factors that help life stay on track.

Because of this business, we've lost the art of cooking with our parents and passing down recipes. We've also lost the art of making food and even growing our own food in gardens.

There has been a recent resurgence of these self-reliant living tactics as more concern grows about the health and future of the planet. And Kris Bordessa is at the forefront of that movement. Years ago Kris started a website called Attainable Sustainable. She shares easy to follow instructions and tips for how to grow food, make food storage at home, make soaps and so much more. That website has now turned into a book with the help of National Geographic. It's the most beautiful book I've ever seen.

Not only is Kris' book great for anyone trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle, it's also great for parents with kids at home. There are a bunch of projects that can be learning experiences or great family exercises. I can't wait for my daughter to get a little older so we can do some of these things together.
