The Folklore of the Cheviots: Ghosts, Fairies & Smugglers

The Folklore of the Cheviots: Ghosts, Fairies & Smugglers

There's something both primal and ancient about mountains. Beautiful and remote, they can provide a harsh and unforgiving environment for those who venture into their territory. Sometimes linked with sleeping giants, mountains are also a reminder of the Earth's formation, with rock contorted into fantastic shapes by immense geological pressures.

The Cheviot Hills run from Northumberland and across into the Scottish Borders. This is a region that has seen bloodshed through battles in 1388, 1402, and 1464. It's also an ancient and mostly untouched landscape, so it's hardly surprising you'd find legends of fairies and other supernatural folk up here.

Let's explore such legends in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore!
