Italian Folk Magic & Shamanism with Dr Angela Puca

Italian Folk Magic & Shamanism with Dr Angela Puca

This month, I've got the joy of introducing you to Dr Angela Puca, who holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in philosophy. In 2021, The University of Leeds awarded her a PhD in Religious Studies, which will soon be published with Brill.

Her research focuses on magic, witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, shamanism, and related currents.

Author of several peer-reviewed publications and co-editor of the forthcoming ‘Pagan Religions in five Minutes’ for Equinox, she hopes to bridge the gap between academia and the communities of magic practitioners by delivering related scholarly content on her YouTube Channel and TikTok ‘Angela’s Symposium' - https://www.youtube.com/c/AngelasSymposium

Find Angela on Instagram and TikTok at @drangelapuca or on X at @AngelaPuca11.

In this interview, we chat about magic from an academic perspective, what Italian folk magic is, and the thorny debate about whether religion and magic are the same thing!

Royal Witches: 15th Century Women Fall Foul of Political Shenanigans

Royal Witches: 15th Century Women Fall Foul of Political Shenanigans

When you think of witchcraft in earlier centuries, you probably think of stereotypically wizened women, huddled around cauldrons or casting curses. You probably wouldn't immediately think of royal witches. Yet within the space of a single century, there were four women in England's royal family that fell prey to witchcraft accusations. Whether they actually practiced witchcraft is unknown, and quite honestly, it's unlikely they did. Rather, the accusations served a political purpose for those around them. So who were Joan of Navarre, Eleanor Cobham, Jacquetta of Luxembourg, and Elizabeth Woodville? Let's find out in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Shapeshifting Witches: From Witch to Hare and Back Again

Shapeshifting witches appear in various British tales, in which witches appear as cats, hares or even hedgehogs. In other stories, they can magically transform humans into horses, to carry them to their meetings. Let's look at shapeshifting witches in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Shapeshifting Creatures of Folklore: Fairies, Selkies and Ghosts

Shapeshifting Creatures of Folklore: Fairies, Selkies and Ghosts

Shapeshifting is an ancient ability that appears in cultures around the world across a vast period of time. It appears in an array of 'types' of shapeshifting. Some creatures can simply shift their form due to a natural ability. Gods often change their form (hello, Zeus), but they can also change the form of others. Demonic activity, sorcery, and being cursed might also lead to a person shifting their form.  Since this is such a vast and multifaceted topic, we'll focus on those creatures able to change their own shape at will, and as ever, I'll stick to the British Isles. Let's look at shapeshifting fairies and supernatural creatures in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore!
