But if you don’t and have not listened to part one of my conversation with Maggie, please go back and listen, or you’ll be quite lost in this episode. The true-crime community and the families of the victims have renewed hope this case will be solved. Because for the first time in a long time, a press conference was held to show off new evidence in relation to the case. The Suffolk County police released pictures of a belt that was found at one of the crime scenes. The reason why this could be a significant piece of evidence is the belt had the initials “WH” or “HW” painted on. They said the belt had been in their possession for more than a decade after it was found with one of the bodies.Since it didn't belong to any of the victims the police said they were confident the belt was “handled” by the killer. They did not say how they can be so sure so we are left to speculate until we hear more.A picture of the belt was released and the picture is up on the sloburnmedia.com website.Police don’t seem to like to use the phrase cold case anymore but this case was cold. There had not been any new information in years, other than the lawsuits you heard about in the trailer. But I will admit this time feels like they are giving a full pressure push to solve the case. They went as far as creating a new website, gilgonews.com so the public can submit information or tips. The first set of remains was discovered in 20-10 while police were searching for another woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert. It when Gilbert's body wouldn’t be found for another year, across the way on Oak Beach. The total number of bodies discovered during their searches was now 11.In a rather callous way of explaining the deaths, police said at the time, since most of the women worked in prostitution it was basically the job that killed them. The first autopsy on Gilbert concluded she had died from drowning and drug overdose. Despite the fact only being 18 inches of water. The family brought in Dr. Michael Boden to perform an independent autopsy on Gilbert's body. He determined she was killed due to homicidal strangulation because the hyoid bone was missing. The autopsy also showed that Shanna she did not die from a drug overdose or drowning. The family of Shannan Gilbert fought the police for more information about their daughter’s death but were seemingly stonewalled by the Suffolk County Police. The family hired the charismatic attorney John Ray to represent anything to do with Shannan. He was always suing somebody to get more information. One crazy thing to note is Mari Gilbert, Shannan’s mom, was murdered by her youngest daughter.Just a tragic set of circumstances for a family already torn apart due to a murder.Apparently, Gilbert had a 21-minute conversation or call with a 9-1-1 dispatcher and the family attorney sued for the release of the tapes. While police looked for Shannan the found four bodies that had obviously been dumped there. As Maggie said in Part One, the demographics of the area are very wide-ranging and the terrain is mostly barren. true-crimePolice found more bodies on Gilgo Beach, which is on the... Your support helps keep this platform alive to continue talking about the stories which don't receive the attention they deserve. In September 2003 I was a student at Cleveland State University. I had just started an internship with the news radio station in Cleveland WTAM. The media and the Internet put a lot of pressure on the police to find this missing girl and the question was raised about why an Amber Alert had not been issued.I learned the business from Levon Putney, now of WCBS New York, about how to cover such a sensitive story. Shakira’s case happened during my first two weeks of interning at WTAM 1100 in Cleveland. It was common for us to attend press conferences, interview family members and on more than one occasion we interviewed Commander of the fourth district police, Michael McGrath. It was a front-row seat to one of Cleveland’s saddest times. It was an eye-opener too for a kid from the suburbs. I realized quickly that there were certain stories you had to approach differently.Shakira's abduction and disappearance were heavily covered through each step of the investigation. The plain dealer stated at the time the investigators worked under the “harsh spotlight of media attention.”While Putney and I were hitting the pavement there was a whole other investigation-taking place. An amber alert is something we have become accustomed to since it was first introduced in 1996. The radio or television is interrupted and a description of the missing child is relayed to the audience. For one reason or another, there was no such alert when Shakira Johnson went missing. The authorities like to say that the criteria weren’t met in her case and therefore no alert was issued. However, only two weeks after she went missing another girl on the east side of Cleveland disappeared, and an Amber Alert was issued in her case. You may say ah…they learned their lesson… but let's not forget Shakira was still missing. No one knows what would have happened if Shakira would have been treated the same way as Amanda Mulliken-White.In a city where race has always been an issue, the fact the police issued an Amber Alert for a white girl from Cleveland Heights, only created more divide.Sources: Cleveland.com Learn more about your ad choices. Who Killed the Robison Family?

Who Killed the Robison Family?

Who Killed...? began as a series to bring attention to the Amy Mihaljevic case. Her family and the community deserve answers to who abducted the killed 10-year-old on October 27th, 1989. During the research, it was clear there are a lot of families who need answers so the podcast has evolved into taking a deep dive into the details of other cases.Hopefully, by providing a voice for the voiceless will help lead to some resolution for all the parties involved in these tragedies. We all deserve answers to the cases that have flummoxed us forever and I hope Who Killed...? will help shine a light on cases that may have been forgotten over time.Cover Art by Bill HuffmanWho Killed...? Your support helps keep this platform alive to continue talking about the stories which don't receive the attention they deserve. Alison Parrott disappeared near Varsity Stadium in downtown Toronto in 1986.She was supposedly meeting with a photographer. It was 6:30 p.m.—four hours since Alison should have returned home. After Alison didn’t return home and her mom called the police.A massive search began two hours later involving 150 police officers and 24 friends and neighbors of Lesley Parrott and her husband, Peter, an engineer. They spent the hot, rainy evening looking through the stadium, then vacant lots, alleys and ravines. The search was covered heavily by television and radio.Alison’s mother would appeal for her daughter’s return, throughout the weekend.SOTTwo days after Alison’s disappearance, two boysdiscovered Her body in a west-end park.Lesley Parrott said Alison regularly used the subway. After the discovery, Police sealed off the area and assigned 60 officers to search all the garbage collected in the subway system since July 25 for clues.Alison’s killing took a toll on the city much like Amy’s killing has continued to loom over Bay Village. The way both girls were stalked is another reason these killings still resonate today. As mentioned in Part One, Alison was a runner. Albeit a newbie to the sport she had talent. She won the first race she entered and the local papers covered her accomplishment.Police at the time believed that Alison’s killer was probably aware of her running and that’s when he began to stalk her. With little evidence at the time, police offered a reward of $50,000 to help track the killer.DNA technology didn’t exist in 1986 but they were able to collect fluids from Alison’s body.A 1986 article they reference the technology being used at the time. It’s interesting because we’re so used to DNA today but this is what they said “, and investigators even used a laser beam to scan the girl’s body for fingerprints, hairs or other traces that might identify the abductor.”One suspect that was interviewed in 1986 was Carl Francis Roy.He was a runner and lived near AlisonThey didn’t have anything at the time to connect him to the body. That changed in 1993 when scientists began using advanced DNA technology. In 1996, the fluids they found on Alison were tested. The test was able to prove once and for all that Francis Carl Roy was indeed the killer. After stalking Roy’s movements for days the police found what they were looking for, a discarded cigarette butt with Roy’s DNA.Dr. Wayne Murray describes what can be found “SOT- Dr. Wayne MurrayAlmost ten years after Alison’s murder Roy was arrested. The strongest piece of evidence against Roy was DNA found in the girl's body that matched Roy's.This is where things start to get a little bit too graphic and I will do my best to minimize his ridiculous defense.Roy's lawyer tried to raise the possibility that police charged the wrong man. This is where the defense jumps the shark. Roy's explanation for the DNA was that he discovered Alison's naked body in a park, and then molested her.Roy's lawyer told the jury “what Roy did was “admittedly vile and disgusting”, he wasn't a murderer.SOT – Defense lawyerThe jury deliberated for six days before returning its verdict. It took five days for the jury to reach a verdict. The jury wasn’t told that Roy had twice been convicted of rape or that both victims were teenagers.Another item the jury was was unaware of is that one of his previous victims was tricked, abducted and bound, much like Alison. Francis Roy was found guilty of the first-degree murder of 11-year-old Alison Parrott.Roy, 41, faces an automatic life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years.Alison's mother, Lesley Party met with...
