LifeStory with Jessica Giles: How to stay positive in the face of adversity

This is Jess. Jess works with me on my team at Modern Estate Planning. Jess’s story is about persevering and remaining positive in the face of difficulty.

As a kid Jess remembers being a protective big sister over her younger brothers. She was great at basketball and had a passion for music. In highschool Jess became the drum major of her school’s band. Jess’s first romantic relationship ended with her boyfriend landing in jail at the age of 16 for being an accessory to murder. Despite the heartbreak, in her junior year Jess was voted Junior Homecoming Queen.

Jess graduated highschool with an outstanding academic record. She went to a HBCU and quickly made friends through the marching band. Jess’s college career took an unexpected turn however when she became pregnant at the age of 18. Five months into her pregnancy she told her parents, with the help of her church pastor.

Jess left college and started working to support her new daughter. She was adamant to learn every skill she could on the job so she could pick up as many shifts as possible. Jess recounts a difficult story of how she was abducted and raped on her way home from work late one night.

Shortly after that experience Jess began dating her future husband. They had two awesome kids together, but ultimately decided to get divorced. Instead of hiring a divorce lawyer and entering into a custody battle, Jess filed the divorce paperwork herself.

Despite all of the adversity she’s experienced, Jess’s main piece of advice for others is to just remain positive. That’s why I think Jess is a huge badass.
