Ep. 584: The First American Cycling Team in Europe - Bill Humphreys

Ep. 584: The First American Cycling Team in Europe - Bill Humphreys

In 1973 Raleigh Bicycles took a bold step by inviting an American four-rider team to compete in the 8 day, 750-mile Tour of Ireland. This was unprecedented as no American team had ever raced in such a prestigious European bike event. And no one gave them a chance.

However, the Raleigh team was young and excited and came out with some impressive firsts. Team member John Howard won a stage and finished 3rd overall, another finished 5th and Bill Humphreys was 3rd in a stage and was awarded the “Most Aggressive Rider” for that day.

Phil Liggett, the commaisare of the race was so impressed that he and invited the team (on the spot) to compete in his prestigious Milk Race the following year.

From that year forward, cycling would change forever as an entire new continent of talent and skill would participant and make its mark on European cycling.

The Raleigh Team will be rejoining next summer to relive the glory of the experience at the Tour of Ireland reunion.

Bill will be showing a 25-minute film of the race and a quick slideshow of the Tour of Ireland Reunion held this past summer at the Philly Bike Expo on November 2, 2019.

Ep. 633: Survivor Winner - Ethan Zohn

Ep. 633: Survivor Winner - Ethan Zohn

Ethan knows what it takes to survive. He’s faced cancer twice, lost his father at the age of 14, had teammates die of AIDS while playing professional soccer in Africa, and has won the reality show Survivor: Africa. Today Ethan is joining Without Compromise to talk about what it means to survive difficult situations and ultimately use those tragedies for good in a principle he calls “never letting a crisis go to waste”. For example, when he won the $1 million prize for Survivor: Africa he decided to use the money to start Grassroot Soccer, an adolescent health organization that uses the popularity of soccer to educate at-risk youth all over the world. To date, they’ve educated over 2 million young people through their program.Ethan was most recently on Survivor Season 40: Winners at WarInstagram: @ethanzohnHis websites:Grassroot SoccerEthanZohn.comOur Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASP* Check out Uncommon Goods: https://uncommongoods.com/aspSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 632: World Record Highlining - Ari DeLashmutt

The world of highlining is often misunderstood as simply walking from one point to another across a thin webbing hundreds of feet in the air. While it is that, it’s so much more. Ari does an amazing job illustrating, even for the totally unfamiliar, the thrill, focus, and adventure of being out there on the line. Most of the episode revolves around him and his friend’s ridiculous accomplishment of highlinging 2 km across an abandoned asbestos mine in (appropriately enough) Asbestos, Quebec. The project was huge, ludicrous, and completely awesome. Enjoy. Video on the project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W2ya3oLHaYInstagram: @ariintheairHis colaboration with KEEN Footwear: www.keenfootwear.com/ambassadors/blog-article-18043.htmlPersonal website: ariintheair.comOur Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASP* Check out Uncommon Goods: https://uncommongoods.com/aspSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
