BTW 51: Spirits of the Land, Spirits of Place with Chiron Armand

Dear Listeners we’re so excited to dive with you into this episode with one of our favorite and dear guests, Chiron Armand. Chiron is is a shamanic practitioner holding initiations in Haitian Vodou, Brazilian Quimbanda, and is a trained hoodoo root doctor in the Southern Conjure tradition. He’s also the author of Deliverance!: Hoodoo Spells of Uncrossing, Healing, and Protection and Clearing Spaces: Inspirational Techniques to Heal Your Home. AND he holds an MA in Performance Studies from New York University and a BA in Ritual Anthropology and Queer Studies from Hampshire College. In short, Chiron is brilliant, thoroughly educated and initiated, and also kind, adorable, and super fun to talk to. We love him so much and know you will too.

Today we’re talking about the Spirits of the Land, and the Spirits of Places. We talk about ancestral relationships to the land and how they show up in your childhood. We talk about techniques for communicating and forming bonds with the spirits of the land, and how to do that even if you’re living in a big city where you feel like any land spirits may be long gone. We discuss how the ocean can heal our relationships, and how the mountains can lead us to deeper integrity and purpose — but that we can’t approach them in an extractive way, wanting something. Instead, we need to approach the spirits of the land in an attitude of romantic reverence.

Questions to ask yourself if you're worried you're failing:

• by whose standards am I failing?
• who benefits from my believing myself a failure?
• who benefits if I love myself more in all my failure? Truly, like which groups of people or beings benefit from your resistance to imposed notions of success?
• how can you throw your failure back in the face of the status quo, or whomever it is that says that you’re failing? Like truly, what would it look like to thumb your nose?
• ask yourself, how can I open up a dialogue here, instead of operating on a dominator model?
