Red Wings Rally and Rantanen - Necas Blockbuster Trade - Jan. 26th, 2025

The Detroit Red Wings and their young guns have clawed back into this thing, all while the NHL trade world had a massive bombshell deal.

Tune in as we open (after commenting on the response to Kucherov's trip on Rasmussen) (00:00) by discussing the home Hockeytown win over Lane Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens, including Dylan Larkin leading the way in his 700th game, Lucas Raymond's increasingly elite abilities, Jonatan Berggren, Alex DeBrincat, and Andrew Copp contributing (after Simon Edvinsson's block), & more (5:35). Next, Marco Kasper & Cam Talbot leading Detroit to a 2-0 win over Andrei Vasilevskiy & the Tampa Bay Lightning (even without Patrick Kane), including Kasper's redirect, Albert Johansson's fantastic play, Lilleberg's hit to J.T. Compher's head, a chippy game with Cirelli, Hedman & Co., and Nikita Kucherov's dirty trip on Michael Rasmussen's empty net goal (16:05).

After that, a look at how the Red Wings rookies have been playing steadily better under Todd McLellan, including Elmer Soderblom, and what that means for future players like Nate Danielson & Carter Mazur - as well as a look at where Steve Yzerman's squad sits in the NHL wild card playoff race (28:45).

Next up, a look at the NHL Quarter Century Team for the Detroit Red Wings (Steve Yzerman, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall, Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Osgood, Sergei Federov, Dylan Larkin, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Chelios, Brian Rafalski, Dominik Hasek), and whether Jimmy Howard or Mo Seider deserved a look (43:50), as well as an update on Axel Sandin Pellikka's plans to leave the SHL after this season to play for either Detroit or the Grand Rapids Griffins (48:20).

We then jump into the insane blockbuster trade that happened in the NHL, as the Colorado Avalanche sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for Martin Necas (with Taylor Hall, Jack Drury, and other pieces coming into play thanks to the Chicago Blackhawks): what does this mean for MacKinnon, Makar & Co., how everyone did in the trade, whether the Red Wings can still sign Rantanen in free agency, where the Vancouver Canucks trying to thrade Elias Petterson and J.T. Miller fit into this, & more (51:40) before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:17:25) - enjoy!
