This episode of Better Call Daddy is filled with heartfelt moments, profound reflections, and thought-provoking insights that will leave you inspired and eager to make a difference in your own community. Sean Dillon loves to hear the word yes. Who doesn't? His grandparents were special people, who lived through the great depression and had amazing stories from their time in the Army Air Corps and as a Speech & Hearing Pathologist. Their stories are lost to time because they were never recorded or saved. That’s on him. Beyond the Mic Podcast was created because our world is a rich tapestry and everyone has a story. His boss once had someone pushing an interview with an American Idol contestant. He didn’t want to do the interview. He poked his head in his office and said, “I got it.” That star told him the four to five minutes of boilerplate interview stuff, but in the last 3 questions, the guest opened up in a new way. From one conversation five years ago now over 400 where there is always one piece of gold left in the pan at the end of their time together. Sean wants to help people record their favorite stories so they are saved forever. Before he begins he asks you to keep in your head one question. “Will you share with us your story?” While still playing on the air he had great interview opportunities that never made it to air. Some were due to length, others were because of the topic. It was time to flip the table on the rules. Any topic/guest is welcome, but you must tell a story & go 'Beyond the Mic.' It's a conversation series with the best actors, artists, authors, and people you need to know. Every guest is shared with authenticity, honesty, and originality giving you content you need to share with others. Sean A Dillon isn't his real name, but he is the storyteller who wants to tell your story. He was born on the Island, moved around the country because of his parents, and currently lives in Lubbock Texas. and will always see you down the road. 318. Collecting Real Items & Relationships: Shirley Yu Founder of Choosii
In this episode of Better Call Daddy, we explore the captivating realm of collecting and safeguarding objects with significant meanings and the intriguing narratives that accompany them. Together with fellow podcaster Alicia Araujo-Elatassi, from Vibes by Alicia podcast, I embarked on a collaborative interview with the Founder of the Choosii app, Shirley Yu. Shirley and I established a connection via Twitter, and when Alicia discovered the subject matter, she eagerly jumped on board. After all, who doesn't know someone with a penchant for collecting? As a former photographer, Shirley understands the value of storytelling and emotional connection in a consumer-driven world that often prioritizes quantity over quality. We explore the shift towards appreciating artisanal and tangible products, emphasizing the desire for emotional attachment and learning the story behind brands. The episode takes an exciting turn when Shirley discusses the idea of social collaboration within collecting communities. She suggests that by collaborating and sharing knowledge, collectors can enhance their collections and ensure the items find appreciative new homes. The concept of connecting collectors through technology is explored, with our speaker sharing insights from her own app designed to help collectors find meaningful connections and discover hidden subgroups within larger collecting communities. Personal stories and memories also come to the forefront, as Shirley recounts her early experiences living with grandparents in China, surrounded by scientific backgrounds and a love for stamp collecting and photography. These childhood memories, as well as the preservation of their grandpa's stamp collection, hold great significance, who believes that the true value of an item lies in the memories and connections it holds, rather than its monetary worth. Throughout the episode, Shirley reflects on the power of names and identity. She shares her own collection, appropriately named the Shirley Collection, which includes items that hold contextual stories, such as clothes with their name sewn in by their grandmother. The importance of knowing and embracing one's own name is a lesson passed down from their grandparents. As always, Better Call Daddy uncovers the hidden gems and stories behind everyday experiences. Whether finding treasures in garbage rooms, connecting collectors through technology, or preserving memories and identities through meaningful collections, this episode is a testament to the power of storytelling and the appreciation of objects with a rich history. She believes in the power of thoughts and affirmations to manifest desires and emphasizes the need to shield oneself from negative energy and stimulating external factors. Michelle advocates for non-attachment and transparency in dealing with grief and attachment. Lastly, she expresses her journey and challenges in finding mentors for her cultural background.
