Dr. Mindy also gives fasting tips for women who are in their post-menopausal phase of life. Later, Dr. Mindy goes deep into the six different stages of fasting. Tune in as we chat about the enemies of fasting and how you can solve all your fasting issues. Lastly, Dr. Mindy answers questions from the Keto Kampers. / / E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. ☕️ Purity Coffee: http//:www.ketokampcoffee.com, use ketokamp at checkout for 10% off [02:55] About The Fasting Circle Women love the idea of fasting – there are so many miracles that can happen when you fast. However, we need to honor our hormones, specifically our sex hormones. Men’s testosterone will come every couple of hours. Women get testosterone once a month. So, we have to fast very differently. The Fasting Circle will help women navigate the fasting experience. Fasting is powerful; we have to do it thoughtfully. [06:30] The Dangers Of Fasting Too Much The first danger is progesterone. You make the most progesterone around day twenty of your cycle. If you are in a low-glycemic state, then it won’t make progesterone very proficient. Fasts will cause cortisol – it’s fine during the front half of the cycle. When you need to make progesterone, you don’t want that stress. So, step out of fasting around day twenty of your cycle. During this time, you should slow life down and relax. You want to honor that your body is trying to make progesterone. Make yourself insulin resistant from day one to day ten of your period. You want to go keto and make yourself insulin resistant during this time. Use keto and fasting during this time (totally opposite of day twenty). [11:50] Fasting For Post-Menopausal Women If you are over forty, you have an organ that is shutting down (your ovaries). No other time in your life will you have an organ shutting down. Your ovaries will make hormones. Well, your body still has to make it so your adrenal glands will take over. We are not made to be permanent fat burners. We are made for metabolic switching. As women get on the other side of menopause, we have to build our hormones back up. [16:20] About The 5-1-1 Rule 5 days of fasting and keto. 1 day of an extended fast (24 hours). 1 day a week of no fasting. Instead, you should be feasting. We are meant for metabolic switching; we are not meant to be permanent fat burners. Women need to go into hormone building times. That’s when we can lean into foods likes squashes, beans, and quinoa. Women should feel free to move in and out of ketosis. [20:15] The Six Styles Of Fasting There are six styles of fasting: Intermittent Fast: 13 – 15 hours. Autophagy Fast: 17 hours. This is when autophagy kicks in. So, the cells start to understand that it needs to clean up their act. It’s great for detox! Gut Reset: 24 hours. This is an incredible fast for people with gut dysbiosis. Fat Burner Fast: 36 hours. You will access toxins and breakdown fat more efficiently at 36 hours. Dopamine Reset: 48 hours. We lose our sensitivity to dopamine over time. We are getting way too much dopamine. For instance, we can order food, binge watch TV, and scroll through social media. Eating all day long will make it so that our dopamine receptor sites are getting blocked. So, we need to make ourselves more sensitive. Immunity Fast: 72 hours. This fast will reboot stem cells – especially when it comes to white blood cells. It has been known as a way to kill cancer cells. [45:00] Fats That Make It Hard To Fast When people start fasting, they come from the standard American diet. These people are mostly insulin resistant. Only 12% of Americans are insulin sensitive. The number one thing that makes you insulin resistant is bad fats. The goal of fasting is to get you out of insulin resistance. If the cell is junked up with bad fats, then fasting will be challenging. The enemy of fasting is bad oils! [52:35] Toxins Are Another Enemy Of Fasting Your fat stores will have excess. When you lose weight, toxins will release into your system. We need to go in and out of detox. Mindy says that we shouldn’t avoid fasting because of symptoms. Instead, we should honor our symptoms and learn how to read them. As you’re fasting, make sure you are opening up your detox pathways. You should be sweating and massaging different parts of your body. The more toxins you have, the harder it may be to get fat adapted and get ketones. [59:20] Helping Your Hair Grow Back The solution to your fasting challenges will be variation. Most of us are already operating from a place of mineral deficiency. Our soil is not giving us enough minerals as it did thirty years ago. If you haven’t already, check out Kiss The Ground: https://kisstheground.com. Most likely, you are mineral deficient, so add minerals back into your diet. [62:55] Leslie McMillan: How Long Is Too Long To Stay In High Ketosis? What are you trying to accomplish? We can get obsessed with our ketones and blood sugar. If you don’t have a cancer diagnosis, then you should stay in high ketosis for 80% of the time and 20% of your time being a sugar burner. [66:30] Katie: How To Fix Gut Health? You have to mix up fasts for your body – it could be the reason that you’re not losing weight. Lean into progesterone foods like squash and potatoes. Dr. Jason Fung - Diabetes, Obesity, Intermittent Fasting, & The Calories Debacle – KKP 24

Dr. Jason Fung - Diabetes, Obesity, Intermittent Fasting, & The Calories Debacle – KKP 24

Today’s episode is very close to my heart as I have a personal experience with diabetes. My father developed Type II Diabetes and I have watched him struggle with this disease. It was a very difficult time of my life. Ever since he passed away five years ago, I set out and study diabetes and why my fathers doctors’ advice did not work.   I came across the book The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Dr. Jason Fung where he explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good. The information that I now know would’ve saved my father’s life. Which is why I fully support Dr. Jason Fung’s, today’s guest, on his mission to spread as much information on diabetes and intermittent fasting to help as many people as possible.   Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist. He’s a world-leading expert on intermittent fasting and low carb, especially for treating people with type 2 diabetes. He has written three best-selling health books and he co-founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program.   Dr. Fung works with Team Diet Doctor where they make it simple for people to understand and implement intermittent fasting, to improve their health.   In this episode, we break down every single thing you need to know about calories, obesity, diabetes and intermittent fasting. Sit tight and enjoy!   This episode is sponsored by the world's healthiest coffee beans, Purity coffee. Get your beans delivered to your door: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com     In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:17] How Dr. Fung got into the health space, particularly nephrology As a Math and Science person, Dr. Fung initially thought he would pursue the field of engineering. He then decided that being a physician was more fitted to his style. After years in the university, he figured that he was also invested in doing research. As a physician, he can help people and do some research at the same time. In choosing a specialty, Dr. Fung felt that Nephrology suited his personality better. Nephrology is a complex specialty which is sort of a thinking-person speciality unlike cardiology which is more of an action specialty (i.e surgery)   [4:13] Diabetes, Obesity and Intermittent Fasting The most common and important cause of kidney disease is Type II Diabetes which is closely related to weight gain and obesity. Treating kidney diseases with medications is the least effective way to treat people. You have to look at the root cause of the disease in order to be successful in treating it. Which is why, for Dr. Fung, the real question was “what causes weight gain?” Nutrition is not considered part of the medical specialty which explains why doctors depend on medications to treat certain illnesses. Second question: What are you gonna do about it? Obesity was not existent during the 1970s. Now, 70% of Americans are obese. Intermittent Fasting: People suffering with Type II Diabetes for 20+ years immediately felt better by intermittent fasting. Fasting is less fun that eating pizza and doughnuts. Fasting is tough work. It is important to give people undergoing intermittent fasting the support and education they need.   [12:30] The Calorie Debacle Coca-Cola created a group called the Global Energy Balance Network to keep people focused on calories. They wanted people to think that 100 calories of broccoli is equivalent to 100 calories of Coca-Cola which is completely wrong. If you think that if you can eat cookies, drink coke and exercise then, you’ll be healthy, you are wrong. But, Coca-Cola wants you to think that this is right. Hormones control hunger, telling our body when to eat and when to stop. Different calorie sources elicit different hormonal responses. Diet and exercise are totally different things. Diet is what you eat. It affects the liver mostly. Exercise is mostly about skeletal muscles. Calorie is not a physiologic term. There’s no calorie-receptors in our body. We think that excessive intake of calories causes obesity. We think that this is a caloric imbalance. Too many ‘calories in’ compared to too few ‘calories out’ leads to weight gain. This Calorie Balance model of obesity has been drilled into us since childhood. Read more about the Calorie Debacle here.     [18:40] Intermittent Fasting as a reasonable alternative to treat patients Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting are not as famous as low-carb diet. Jason Fung received a lot of backlash when he started to introduce intermittent fasting to his patients. Because of IF, patients were getting better. At the end of the day, you can’t ignore that. Other doctors started to notice the success of IF. Through his book, The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss, Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good.   [25:55] Why the common treatments for type 2 diabetes seem to make things worse Type II Diabetes is a reversible disease. The standard treatment of Type II diabetes focused on getting the sugar down by medications. Doctors should’ve focused on the patient’s diet to help them lose weight because if you lose weight, your diabetes gets better. Jason Fung forever changed the way we think about obesity and he wanted to do the same for type 2 diabetes through his book The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally He explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. People cannot just make a decision to burn more fat calories, or to feel less hungry. These are physiological issues and must be addressed via physiology.   [31:49] Dr. Fung’s Intensive Dietary Management (IDM) program The IDM program helps people reach their health goals through intermittent fasting and simple-to-follow time-restricted eating strategies. It’s a structured digital lifestyle intervention developed by Megan Ramos and Dr. Jason Fung that provides you with all the education and support you need to succeed. At least several thousands of people have gone through the Intensive Dietary Management program and the number keeps adding up.   For 2019 years, people have already been talking about fasting and they don’t talk about it as a terrible thing. Fung clarifies that he didn’t invent intermittent fasting. He just started talking about it because it seems logical to him.   [37:14] Guinness World Record on the Longest Recorded Fast In the 1971 edition of The Guinness Book of Records, Barbieri's 382-day fast was recognized as the longest recorded. The most important thing is that people feel well throughout their entire fasting. For 365 days a year, 3 meals a day, you are taking a total of 1000 meals per year. If you do a 7-day fast, you’re going to miss 21 of that 1000. How is that a big deal?   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle Visit the official YouTube channel of Dr. Jason Fung To know more about Intermittent Fasting, click here Are you interested in keto or low carb? Grass Fed vs Grain Fed, Folate vs Folic Acid, Food, Anxiety & Depression, – Autumn Smith KKP 21

Grass Fed vs Grain Fed, Folate vs Folic Acid, Food, Anxiety & Depression, – Autumn Smith KKP 21

Today’s episode is a story about pain and struggles and how these experiences help develop passion and purpose. Autumn Smith, joins us today to share her own wellness journey of healing from IBS and her mission to inspire people to take care of themselves. She gives tips on diet and nutrition, exercise, drugs/medicines, and routine for greater physical and mental health, including the importance of consistently testing your blood sugar levels. You don’t want to miss this one!   Autumn suffered acute digestive issues since she was a teenager and numerous experts failed to offer solutions that worked. Very concerned, her husband, Chas took matters into his own hands. His extensive research led him to the paleo diet.   Together they implemented its principles for 30 days and by the end, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved. With this wonderful learning experience, Autumn focused on disseminating information to facilitate wellness for everyone. She achieves this through Paleovalley and Wild Pastures.   Paleovalley creates products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health. Their products are a labor of love, and their only hope is that they help your family feel as vibrant as theirs. I, myself, testify to that.   If you want to know more about their products and try them for yourself, visit their store here. Get 10% off of your products by using the code: KETOKAMP10.   In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:30] From Pain to Purpose Autumn started to have digestion issues as early as 10 years old. They jumped from doctor to doctor and nobody really gave her a ‘healing’ answer. Autumn managed her pain on her own and she now knows that there’s a profound gut and brain connection. With Autumn’s decision to manage it instead of address it, her mental health started to deteriorate. It was so bad that Autumn was kicked out of her parents’ house before she even graduated from high school. This experience helped her develop the level responsibility she has today. From rock bottom, she pulled it together, got to college, moved to LA, pursued a dance career where she worked for Tracy Anderson, a celebrity fitness trainer. Her husband noticed that she is still suffering a lot that they decided to visit one last doctor. Still, no ‘healing’ answer was given. Through their self-guided research, she and her husband healed her digestive issues with the paleo diet. Within 30 days of the paleo diet, her digestive issues completely went away. Through Paleovalley, Autumn’s purpose is to facilitate wellness for everyone else by disseminating excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide   [5:50] Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Feeling bloated after meals. Experiencing pain and cramps in the lower abdomen. Getting itchy skin rashes or blisters. Deteriorating mental health. Unstable blood sugar levels.   [6:40] There is no cookie-cutter approach on regulating your blood sugar levels. Keto diet has been shown to improve blood sugar control. Regulating your blood sugar level is similar to a fingerprint. It is very unique. Number 1 step: Test your blood sugar levels. It is important to test. You cannot get all the information you need from the glycemic index and glycemic load. Fifty (50%) of people today are insulin resistant → highly correlated with the number of people with mental health issues.     [9:33] Mental Health, Drugs and Nutrition. Anti-anxiety drugs increase the risk of addiction in just 4 days. The pharmaceutical industry taught us the depression is just a case of serotonin-deficiency. Dietary intervention for people with mental health issues: Stabilize your blood sugar level. Address nutrient-deficiency. Track nutrition & count calories. (e.g Cronometer) Most mental health issues today are rooted with the immune system inflammation. Make sure you are not eating inflammatory foods. Identify your food sensitivities and gut issues.   [15:58] Foods, Anxiety and Depression Foods that trigger anxiety and depression: Sugar Gluten Back in the 1950s, there’s an association with gluten and schizophrenia Dairy Gluten and dairy breakdown into exorphins. These chemicals make you feel good in the moment but a little while after, they take you down and make you feel terrible. Caffeine Foods that reduce anxiety and depression: Seafoods (B12 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids) Organ Meats Vitamin A Folate Riboflavin Vegetables For a full list of foods with purported mental-health benefits, check out the study Antidepressant foods: An evidence-based nutrient profiling system for depression   [23:20] Story behind Paleovalley To heal her digestive issues, Autumn eliminated refined foods, shopped at local farmers’ market, ate fresh organic fruits and vegetables, grass fed meats and wild seafood. By the end of a 30-day period, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved Autumn and her husband, Chas, originally focused on disseminating information. They soon realized that there simply weren’t many truly healthy food products on the market. Realizing that they had an important job to do, they launched Paleovalley which aims to create products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health.   [27:35] Folate vs. Folic Acid Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9. Research suggests that your body won’t use it as efficiently as folate. Folate is the food form of vitamin B9. People with MTHFR, a genetic mutation 50% of the population has, won't be able to use these fake B Vitamins which interferes with the metabolism of the real ones.   [30:00] Differentiating grass fed animals from the others Grass fed animals are fed with grass and grains. They are free to roam around in their pasture. They are not exposed to pesticides. Products of grass fed animals have higher nutrient levels, better fatty acid profile, higher antioxidant levels and higher mineral content. Grass fed farmers can use a number of different grazing styles. Continuous grazing Animals graze a pasture for an extended amount of time with no, or infrequent rest to the plants from grazing. Not ideal since it degrades the environment Rotational grazing Mimic nature A system where a large pasture is divided into smaller paddocks allowing livestock to be easily moved from one paddock to another Stimulates rapid grass growth   [38:18] Autumn’s decision of not being in retail stores Paleovalley’s goal is to produce affordable products for consumers. “If we don’t go to retail, we don’t pay the extra costs associated with going into retail.” This allows them to keep their integrity high. “Our ultimate goal is to make it accessible. Retail, sometimes, does the opposite.”   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle To know more about Autumn Smith and Paleovalley, click here Wild Pastures - From Pasture-Centric Farms To Your Table Connect with Autumn: autumn@paleovalley.com Check out Paleovalley’s products. Intermittent Fasting Common Questions & Answers, Part I – Ben Azadi: KKP 20

In this episode, we’ll talk all about intermittent fasting. Here is an overview of this episode: The history of fasting Will you go into starvation mode when fasting? Will you lose muscle while fasting? Who should practice intermittent fasting? Will my metabolism slow down? What exactly is intermittent fasting? And much more! A study showed a 2,000% increase in HGH after a 24 hour fast in men, and a 1,300% increase in HGH after a 24 hours fast in women. 07:28 Interesting Fasting Facts: In ancient Egypt, India and Greece, dosed starvation was used as for a curative and preventive purposes, as to strengthen the spirit.   It is known that Pythagoras (580-500 years. BC), Greek philosopher and mathematician, founder of the famous school of philosophy, systematically starved for 40 days, rightly believing that it increases the mental perception and creativity. He demanded strict 40-day fast on water alone from each of his numerous disciples and followers.   Hippocrates (460-357 years BC) - a physician who owns a great medical commandment: “Do no harm!”, was an ardent supporter of moderation and treatment through fasting. He wrote: “The addition of food should be much rarer, since it is often useful to completely take it away while the patient can withstand it, until the force of the disease reaches its maturity. The man carries within him a doctor; you just have to help him do his work. If the body is not cleared, then the more you feed it, the more it will be harmed. When a patient is fed too richly, the disease is fed as well. Remember – any excess is against nature.”   11:20 Benefits of intermittent fasting. 13:03 Is fasting effective against cancer? 14:35 Does intermittent fasting help to burn fat? 16:59 What will happen to my blood sugar levels when I intermittent fast? 18:53 Will I go into starvation mode when intermittent fasting? 20:47 Will I lose muscle when intermittent fasting?   // R E S O U R C E S Benefits of fasting study:  https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-04/imc-sfr033111.php   Study shows a 13% increase in metabolism after 4 consecutive days of fasting:  https://idmprogram.com/fix-broken-metabolism/     Join The Keto Kamp Inner Circle: https://www.ketokamp.com  Get the Keto Kickstart Guide for FREE: http://www.ketokickstartguide.com   Get my FREE Fasting Cheat Sheet: http://www.fastingcheatsheet.com YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/ketokamp  My Favorite Keto Beef Jerky & More: http://www.paleovalley.com Use coupon code ketokamp10 for 10% off   This podcast is for information purposes only. The Brain & Heart Connection, Busting Self Limiting Beliefs, Love & Gratitude – Sean Croxton KKP 18

The Brain & Heart Connection, Busting Self Limiting Beliefs, Love & Gratitude – Sean Croxton KKP 18

Today’s episode might be a little bit different than all of the previous ones. Still, it is as insightful as ever, especially because I am joined by the mastermind behind the Keto Kamp movement. I am humbled to be joined by Sean Croxton, a podcast host, author, entrepreneur, and prosperity teacher. I followed his growth and career for the past 8 years, most especially when he still hosts the Underground Wellness Radio, one of the internet’s most popular health podcasts.   During his seven years with Underground Wellness, Sean penned the still-popular Dark Side of Fat Loss ebook, started the JERF (Just Eat Real Food) movement, and hosted seven online summit events, including The Thyroid Sessions, Digestion Sessions, and The Depression Sessions.   Now, Sean is the host of The Quote of The Day Show, the #1 daily motivational podcast, featuring short inspirational teachings from the best of the best speakers. He is also the creator of Money Mind Academy, an 8-week course that will completely change your relationship with money.   In this episode, Sean shares the story of how his hardwork and determination got him to where he is today. He also explained the science behind developing a habit while we dive deep into physiology, neurocardiology, brain chemistry and how it is connected with your keto diet and fasting. Tune in! In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:55] Sean Croxton, the early years Sean’s mother worked three jobs. By the time he wakes up in the morning, his mom is already at work. When he goes to bed at night, his mom is still at work.  “If I didn’t have that experience of living at the poverty line, I probably wouldn’t have the value that I have on abundance.” His early years was a great learning experience for him. It showed him the value of earning money.  It showed him the freedom of earning money. It showed him that in order to have more money, you gotta do more service.   [8:18] The audio clip that helped changed Sean’s life  In November of 2009, his friend, Antonio, sent him an audio clip of John Demartini. “The amount of money that you have will always be in direct proportion to the quality and quantity of the service you provide.”   [17:10] After graduating from college, Sean became a personal trainer. His uncle and his aunt were his biggest influences on why he took health in college.  As a personal trainer, Sean had to build up the courage to talk to people when suffering with social anxiety. He had his first panic attack while doing some personal training. His doctor prescribed him Prozac but what he really wanted was Paxil. While training his last client, he found himself in the midst of a “Prozac-induced” panic attack. His social anxiety isn't completely gone and Sean's ok with that. He prefers to call it introversion. [22:32] Back in 2008, Sean launched his first show, Underground Wellness Radio. The podcast ran for 7 years and he released 348 episodes over this period of time. Surprising to most, in 2015 Sean closed up shop with his brand Underground Wellness. “Passions have seasons, and all seasons eventually come to an end.” - Lisa Nichols Sean felt that his passion for interviewing health experts is over.    [26:08] The importance of passion and loving what you do for a living If you are not living according to your highest values, it means you are not really living.  You are living by social idealisms. You are living by something outside of you. Life is too short for that. A lot of us are trapped in the ‘how’ When you are fully aligned with your values, the ‘how’ just shows up.   [27:23] Sean's motivational influences after shutting down Underground Wellness Sean was super deep into reading books by John F. Demartini.  Books by Demartini: How to Make One Hell of a Profit and Still Get to Heaven   The Breakthrough Experience The Gratitude Effect The Values Factor   He also read books by Bob Proctor. Books by Bob Proctor:   You Were Born Rich The Art of Living   Sean dived deep into physiology, neuroscience and brain chemistry. On his new YouTube Channel, Mind Kamp, he flipped the focus to personal development with a sprinkle of health.   [31:22] Neurocardiology: Interaction between the brain and the heart In the communication between the brain and the heart, 90% of it goes from the heart to the brain. There’s a little brain inside our hearts that stores information, memories, personalities, etc. Our hearts are our point of attraction.  Heart rate variability is the physiological phenomenon of variation in the time interval between heartbeats. We don’t want these to be to low. That would mean we are unhealthy.  Emotions dictate your heart rate variability.  Measure your heart rate variability through: Oura Ring emWave2 [34:11] Adding love and gratitude into your keto diet and fasting Meditation comes a long way. emWave2: emWave 2 helps with the analysis of HRV that reflects heart-brain interaction and autonomic nervous system dynamics, which are particularly sensitive to changes in your emotional state. emWave2 technology is based on "the coherence breakthrough". Coherence is a state of synchronization between your heart, brain and autonomic nervous system which has been proven to have numerous mental, emotional and physical benefits. [36:44] Your brain is the record of the past The past is literally composed of electrical current that flows in your brain.  These electrical thoughts become your biochemical feelings.  How to change these wirings? 1. Relax Get out of the high beta brain wave state.  Calm down and get into the alpha creative state.  2. Do your meditation.  AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode:  Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle Get The Keto Kickstart Guide for FREE To know more about Sean Croxton, visit his website here.
