REBUILDING COMMUNITIES through the ARTS during the FOOT-and-MOUTH crisis - (extract) EP008: Director of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, Lisa Tregale

Using the power 💪 of the 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 🎭 and 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 🏫 to 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 after a 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞. Sounds familiar! In episode 008 of the High Point podcast, Lisa Tregale, Director of BBC National Orchestra and chorus of Wales, explained that after the 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭-𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 in 2001, the community in 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐧 was 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝. At the time, people 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 of the villages. 🚫🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ The 🍻 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐬 and the 🛍️ 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐬 were 🚫𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐭. The only place open was the 🏫 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥. So as director of Beaford Arts @_beaford , she helped 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 through the 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬. 🎭🖼️🎶 They brought 💃𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 , 🎵𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 and 🎥𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦𝐬 to the rural community hall. They organised 🍽️ 𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 , 🍻𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐬, 🎟️𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐬, etc. And all the 💰𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 made by organising these events went 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬. 👥 This is an amazing example of 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 for communities.
