Can Anything Overcome Our Expectations For Ourselves w/ Spiritual Teacher Cathy Heller

Can Anything Overcome Our Expectations For Ourselves w/ Spiritual Teacher Cathy Heller

I grew up in the Christian church amongst celebrated Bible verses, such as, “Ask and ye shall receive,” “Knock and the door will be open to you,” and “Seek, and ye shall find.” These concepts and requests were to be aimed at God. Today we hear a lot about manifesting. This often gets friction from the religious crowd as it feels like credit is given to the individual and not God. In this episode today I have a conversation with Cathy Heller about it. We are not discussing, dissecting, or debating religion or doctrine, but really honing in on our expectations, a concept I’ve been researching again as of late. Can I have faith in God but suffer from not expecting good things to come my way? Can I not have faith in God but benefit because I do expect good things to come my way? And thus my title for this episode of asking, “Can Anything Overcome Our Expectations For Ourselves?” Cathy Heller is a renowned teacher, podcaster and author. She hosts a top spiritual podcast, Abundant Ever After. She is a practitioner of what she cites as the law of reception, and has a large following that includes a lot of the top psychologists I respect and have had here on the podcast. Her recent book is called, Abundant Ever After: Tools For Creating A Life Of Prosperity And Ease, and as I read it I just resonated with Cathy’s spirit and intrigued myself with her perspectives, so following is our discussion together. If you decide to buy her book, go to cathyheller.com/book and she has some of her courses she’ll give you for free. Social Credit Report: The Qualities Everyone Wants To Know About Each Other

Social Credit Report: The Qualities Everyone Wants To Know About Each Other

In this episode Social Credit Report: The Qualities Everyone Wants To Know About Each Other. With anyone you care about or are interested in caring about or relying on, you want to know what they are about. What they value. Which is ultimately, what you can count on. Think about it like a social credit report. A credit report tries to measure if you can be counted on financially. People try to seek out our values as a social credit report. They want to know what they can trust. We generally want to know if we can trust someone with the general morals and ethics we deem important. But it’s not all about morality necessarily. If you want a drinking or partying buddy, then you want to know if you can trust that at most any time, they will join you. If you like fighting at bars then you are looking for…a certain set of values. If you want someone to join you on a moments notice for a sketchy, unplanned and relatively unsafe adventure out in the mountains, you can count on me. But knowing that, do you want to do business with me? These are the things we wonder about each other. Are you clear about your own values? That’s the show. Hey, got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. I don’t want to just talk to you here, I want to talk with you. kmiller@kevinmiller.co. Patrick Lencioni: Grappling With Values & How To Balance Social Issues

Patrick Lencioni: Grappling With Values & How To Balance Social Issues

We look at how our values fuel our drive and how they often come into friction with today’s sociopolitical issues that I feel we are pressured to all have a solid stance on. I see and have felt the tension it can cause. What we grapple with as individuals affects our work and where we work and the corporations that influence and employ much of the population. Patrick Lencioni is someone corporations look to as a guide. He is a highly in demand speaker and the author of thirteen best-selling books with over nine million copies sold. After more than twenty years in print, his classic book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, remains a fixture on national best-seller lists and with most businesses. His most recent book is The Six Types of Working Genius: A Better Way to Understand Your Gifts and I have widely evangelized his personal profiling tool at workinggenius.com where you can find out what your working genius is. I’ve had all my kids take it. Patrick recently wrote a blog titled, “How To Sew Unity In A Time Of Division.” The article was aimed at CEOs and the issues they and employees are facing. But I took it as an opportunity to talk with someone whose insight I respect, about values overall and the struggle in our current culture to live them out. Patrick says, “The world changed with frightening speed in the past five years. That change wasn’t so much a shift as it was a divide. The emergence of a host of sociopolitical issues has created a massive rift in culture, one that is unprecedented in the past 50 years.” We don’t get into politics. We don’t get into any specific cultural issue. We do have a conversation about values that Pat said was unlike any podcast conversation he’s ever had. My hope is this conversation helps you consider your values and your stance, or not…which I’ll discuss more in the next episode, on today’s cultural issues. Richard Leider: The Pope Of Purpose On How To Better Understand Your Callings and Gifts

Richard Leider: The Pope Of Purpose On How To Better Understand Your Callings and Gifts

Nothing drives us like a purpose. We love stories of epic circumstances that led to heroic acts. Whether it’s Martin Luther King or your favorite fictional superhero who saves the world. Yet most of us lead lives that don’t feel so epic and the idea of having a purpose can sound far fetched and yes, even fictional. I feel the topic has gotten so diluted. But I feel it’s direly needed. Rabbi Daniel Lapin stated the opposite of depression is purpose. I again find it as the ultimate driver of all we do, or want to do. So here I bring you an expert. The OG. The GOAT if you will. Richard Leider is widely viewed as a pioneer of the global purpose movement and is actually referred to as “the pope of purpose”. PBS had him do a special called The Power of Purpose and he has eleven books and three best sellers. In this episode I dive in, getting to what I feel are the root issues on purpose that will help you grasp and embrace it further. We get into defining “calling” and “gifts” and I felt the conversation was more than profound. It’s pivotal. You can find Richard at richardleider.com and my muse for our talk is his book, Who Do You Want To Be When You Grow Old?: The Path of Purposeful Aging. But the testimonies on this book come from people of all ages. Though Richard also makes a profound distinction between getting older...and growing older, that we all need to hear. Why We Love The Olympics & How We Can Emulate It In Our Own Lives

Why We Love The Olympics & How We Can Emulate It In Our Own Lives

We watch the Olympics because it inspires us. Watching people give it their all just touches us at a soul level. Being brought to the very limit of our ability and pulling through is a deep, human experience. Some of us have experienced this from a voluntary activity like sports. Some of you have experienced it from trauma and being victimized. Now, not everyone dreams of being on the podium. Of aspiring to repeat an exercise routine a billion times so you can perform it live in front of thousands. That is not really the point. It’s the internal experience, and it’s one we can all experience. Drive with me a moment Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs - What If We Were All Rated?

Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs - What If We Were All Rated?

I’m taking aim at Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Maslow first introduced the concept of a hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper, titled "A Theory of Human Motivation.” The point was to showcase that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. What I want you to pay attention to and consider is that Maslow showed us what we tend to do. Not what is best. He was just reporting. Yet as a culture we seem to have taken his reporting of what we tend to do as what we should do. When I go to the coffee shop and pass the pastries I tend to want one. If I was a caveman I’d just take one and eat to survive. However, I’m not a caveman. I don’t at all need that pastry and the sugar and gluten would not serve me best, so I pass it by. Most of the time. I’m not a total masochist. But I’ve evolved beyond survival. But as a culture we still look to the basic needs as our priority and even our status symbols. What if our level of self-actualization, self worth and relational was as apparent as our ability to job, money and belongings? Maslow’s pyramid I find more valuable as a relic of something we’ve evolved beyond than a guideline. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. What Jerry Seinfeld Teaches Us About Our Current & Future Selves

What Jerry Seinfeld Teaches Us About Our Current & Future Selves

I’ve long been curious about the difference in our immediate drive and our future drive. I often refer to it as our appetites. We have the appetite of what I want right now, and what I want in the future, and they don’t often align. Right now I want to eat that donut. In the future I want to lose weight. And the conflict. We think it takes self discipline and drive to cater to the future need and we frustrate ourselves with succumbing to the right now appetite and we think we lack self-discipline and drive. We don’t. We have all the self-discipline and drive we need. What we lack is clarity on our core motive. Our why. And find out why our long term desires aren’t driving us more than our right now desires. I’m reminded of one of Jerry Seinfeld’s bits that I want to break down for you. Drive with me a moment. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. Bill Weir: Our Story Effects The Planet & How And Why To Do Anything That Matters

Bill Weir: Our Story Effects The Planet & How And Why To Do Anything That Matters

I’m more focused than ever on how our personal stories are what drives us. Part of my own story is care and concern for our planet. Not because I’m so altruistic, but I adore the outdoors. It’s my playground and I selfishly want it conserved and protected so I can keep enjoying it…and my grandkids can as well. So I’m driven to help conserve and protect it. But I also realize how frustrating it is. I have a full life and taking time to recycle or limit my own use of resources feels like a drop in the bucket and a hassle. Then comes along Bill Weir, CNN’s first and current Chief Climate Correspondent. He’s written a book titled, Life As We Know It (Can Be): Stories of People, Climate, and Hope in a Changing World. It came from some letters he initially wrote for his son. The book is actually crafted to follow Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Bill states, “Now more than ever human stories will be the difference between destruction and salvation. Climate change on a degraded planet is not a problem created or solved by physics or technology. It is a problem created and solved by stories.” That’s what piqued my interest. So I sat down with Bill. Honestly, I wanted to get some education and understanding about what is actually happening from someone on the front lines, not just someone else theorizing on what they’ve heard. Bill draws on his experience creating and hosting the primetime CNN Original Series “The Wonder List with Bill Weir,” now streaming on Discovery+. Weir and his team produced four seasons of the show across 28 countries, highlighting wondrous people, places, cultures, and creatures on the brink of seismic change. He actually won an Emmy Award. Bill is one of those news reporters like they depict in the movies. He was among the first reporters into the floodwaters of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Japan’s tsunami zone during the nuclear crisis of 2011. He dodged Taliban bullets in Afghanistan, led network coverage from Iraq and was the first American to broadcast live from Tibet. His live shots have come from atop the Golden Gate Bridge and below the waters of the Great Barrier Reef while his adventure reporting includes Head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code KEVIN and depending on the model receive UP TO 39% off or UP TO $300 off! What Attracts Us To Our Work vs What Keeps Us There

What Attracts Us To Our Work vs What Keeps Us There

We are driven to our work for many reasons. Those reasons we go into the job, the career, or the business are what dictate our overall happiness and success, yet most of us go after it for the wrong reasons, and suffer for it. This is a show anyone working will want to listen to, but I’ll tell you, I feel it should be a requirement for today’s youth. I published this show a few years ago on another podcast, and I bring it to you posthumously, as my guest is Dan Miller. Dan was one of our foremost career experts and the acclaimed author of “48 Days To The Work & Life You Love.” In my lifetime I’ve hardly spent a day of my life working at something I didn’t have great fulfillment in and I have Dan to thank. Long before he was a career expert, he was my Dad. And I’m eternally privileged and grateful. My Dad passed away in January of 2024. Join the discussion as we help you clarify why are working at what you are, and how to better fuel your vocational success by getting into alignment with your desires and your motives.
