Sports vs. Coronavirus

Sports vs. Coronavirus

A stadium emptied in the middle of a game. Entire seasons, not to mention the Summer Olympic Games, postponed or cancelled. This week, follow award-winning reporter Aaron Granillo as he tries to figure out how sports are surviving in a quarantined world.

Michelle Newblom was finishing her senior year at Seattle University when the coronavirus hit. She and her teammates watched in disbelief as their spring track season was cancelled before it could begin. Her written reflection, which she mentions in the episode, is available via the Redhawk Tribune.

KIRO Radio's Chris Sullivan joins to go over the new "coronavirus" rules of the ultimate socially distant sport: golf! Sully and Aaron also discuss the precarious position of high school students who are aiming for a spot on a college team - and graduating seniors who are wondering if they'll make it to campus in the fall.

Then, we've got an exciting double feature from our sister station, 710 ESPN. First up, producer Jessamyn McIntyre from Danny and Gallant talks about the challenges of putting on a sports talk show every morning ... when there are no sports!

And will there be baseball in July? Mariners reporter Shannon Drayer gives us an update. With fewer games, changing rules, and heated, ongoing contract negotiations, this is a juicy story.

Did we say golf was the ultimate socially distant sport earlier? "Esports" might actually steal that crown. The competitive world of online gaming was on the rise pre-quarantine, and its popularity has skyrocketed since. The University of Washington team is not going to be left behind, so Alec Downing interviews Trevor Whiton, advisor to the collegiate Esports team. If you'd like to cheer on the UW, you can check out their Twitch here.
