Nirbhaya means "the fearless one", and it was the name given by the Indian media to a 23 year old woman - Jyoti Singh - after she was brutally gang raped on a bus by 6 men.

Jyoti’s rape and murder was a watershed moment in India, it made grisly headlines across the world, and brought tens of thousands of protesters onto the streets of Delhi to demand a change in how the nation deals with violence against women and girls. This horrific attack still continues to dominate the news as the four remaining convicted men are set to be hanged any day now...
