He is an Italian Wine Ambassador and also has WSET Level 3. To learn more visit: Twitter @matt_paice LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/in/matt-paice-6bb4ba2 About about today’s guest producer: Giovanni Pesquera-Elia Giovanni Pesquero-Elia was born on June 1959, and was raised on a farm in Serraboella – Neive. He started to work in the fields following in his parents footsteps. In 1972 he started to learn the winemaking process, while studying at the Oenological School Umberto I of Alba. After 6 years he became an Oenologist, showing specific talent in the field of chemistry. For many years he spent time in the cellar winemaking, following traditional rules. After his brother Silvano joined the company a few years later, the two started managing the cellar together. A pivotal shift for Giovanni’s career came with his meeting of Thomas Abruzzini, considered the American Veronelli, given his incredible nose and understanding of the dynamics of winemaking in Europe and markets in United States. He was one of the first people to import and trust Piemonte. He thought it to be a wine area in Italy with the greater potential to compete with the wines he was previously importing into the USA: Bourgogne and Bordeaux. Tom brought Giovanni to the States and helped him to learn about their much more complex and sophisticated market for wine. At the time the US was not well acquainted with the world of Italian wines. But he also let Giovanni and his family learn techniques used in many other wineries across the world, opening the eyes to more sophisticated winemaking styles. This relationship brought their wines to the US, after many years (50) of absence. In this way, Giovanni started to follow the markets too, steering away from the predominant domestic market and expanding worldwide. A future encounter with Marco De Grazia, famous for having started the revolution of the Langhe with the Barolo Boys, led to a further step in learning and the expansion of the winery. Now like every member of the family, Giovanni is in charge of supervising the farming, winemaking decisions and established markets.
