Episode 61 - Ed Johnson: Positive Intelligence

This week, Samantha sits down with Ed Johnson, executive leadership and mental fitness coach, to discuss Positive Intelligence (PQ). Joining Ed and Samantha this week is Bridget, one of Ed’s coaching clients. Bridget provides her perspective on what coaching means to her and what coaching has done for her. Bridget details her journey of self discovery not only through coaching, but through the specific lens of Positive Intelligence.

Positive Intelligence (PQ) is a way of thinking about how each person operates in everyday life, at work and at home. The basis of PQ is rooted in the idea that each one of us has “the sage” that can guide us and lead (or pull) us through life, but we struggle with our own “judge” and multiple “saboteurs” that tend to derail our thoughts and push us in directions that keep us from reaching our full potential.

Bridget talks about one of the biggest shifts in her own perspective that came from coaching. It’s the idea of exploring assumptions we have versus actual facts and how our judge and saboteurs lead us to believe things that aren’t actually true. The idea of assumptions versus fact is a mindset that has carried over into her life beyond just coaching sessions. Ed adds his excitement around how he feels when one of his clients is able to coach themselves.

The Saboteurs are (in no particular order):

The Judge (the main saboteur we all have)

The Avoider

The Victim

The Stickler

The Pleaser

The Hyper-Achiever

The Restless

The Hyper-Vigilant

The Controller

Thee Hyper-Rational

The Sage muscles are:

Explore

Empathy

Innovate

Navigate

Activate.

Bridget explains that coaching should be thought of as a door that is open for all of us, and that it’s a door that can be walked through and backed out of if coaching doesn’t end up being right for you, so don’t close the door; give it a try. What do you have to lose?
