Short Suck #30 - Sherlock Holmes and Spiritualism

Short Suck #30 - Sherlock Holmes and Spiritualism

Today we take a peek at the interesting life of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the man who invented the world's most famous and influential literary detective, Sherlock Holmes. However, Doyle was never really that interested in the fictional creation that made him famous. He was very interested, though, in spiritualism, and took part in hundreds of seances and wrote dozens of books, pamphlets, and newspaper articles attesting to a belief he saw as indisputable fact: that the dead surround us and we can speak with them.

112 - The Russian Sleep Experiment

Did Russian Scientists seal five prisoners in an airtight chamber and dosed them with an experimental stimulant gas to test the effects of prolonged sleep deprivation in the 1940s? Did these prisoners lose their minds, scream until they'd torn their vocal chords, start eating their own flesh, attack guards who tried to release them, and die soon after the gas was turned off? Or, is this just an urban legend? And if it is an urban legend, where and when did it start? And why do people believe it? The Russian Sleep Experiment and the creation of modern web horror lore explored, today, on Timesuck! 110 - Australia's Katherine Knight and the Murder Everyone Saw Coming

On February 29th, 2000, in the small, rugged town of Aberdeen, Australia, forty-five year old mother and grandmother Katherine Knight stabbed her live-in boyfriend thirty-seven times. Then, after showering, changing, and withdrawing $1,000 out of his checking account from a local ATM, she skinned him, hung his skin up on a meat hook, and cooked up various parts of his body with the intention of feeding him to his own children. Why in God’s name did she do this? Why would anyone do this? Find out on today's insane, true crime edition of Timesuck! 109 - The Chessboard Killer: Alexander Pichushkin

Alexander Pichushkin insisted he’d killed sixty-three people after being apprehended in 2006 but authorities only had enough evidence to convict him of forty-eight murders. The bodies of other victims had vanished. He killed his first victim in 1992 and didn’t get caught until 2006. Not only was he not remorseful, he was proud. He was disappointed that he wasn’t convicted of killing more people than his idol, Chikatilo, convicted of 52 murders in 1992. His goal was kill 64 - one for every space on a chessboard. Why? Why did he want to kill anyone? Who did he kill? How did he kill them? And how did he get away with it for so damn long? 108 - Lizzie Borden Took an Axe...

During an oppressive heat wave in August 1892, prominent Fall River residents Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered in their home; each dealt multiple and savage blows to their heads with a hatchet. Were they killed by Andrew's strange, thirty-two year-old daughter? A lot of evidence points to her being the killer. But, she was acquitted. I for one, think Lizzie was probably guilty. But will you? Make your own decision after listening to today's Timesuck? Timesuck is brought to you by the The Jim Jefferies Show podcast. Listen wherever you listen to podcasts! 107 - The Lost Colony of Roanoke

In 1587, Englishman John White led a group of 118 colonists to what was supposed to Roanoke Island. One hundred fifteen of those colonists were never seen again after White returned to England to get word to Sir Walter Raleigh that the colonists desperately needed supplies. On August 18th, 1590, John White returned to Roanoke three years after leaving to get those supplies and found the settlement completely deserted and the word “Croatoan” carved into a fence post. And historians, archaeologists and others have been trying to figure out what happened to those initial settlers ever since. Hear there story and take a look into the most popular possibilities, today, on Timesuck! 106 - Andrew MF'n Jackson: Gunslingin' War Hero and President

Andrew Jackson. Seventh president of the United States. First president born to immigrant parents. Only president to serve in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812. First president to be a resident of a state other than Massachusetts or Virginia. A hard-nosed son of Scotch-Irish immigrants who was quick to throw down in a duel. He fought in the Revolutionary War at the age of 13 and then fought off a would be assassin with a cane at the age of 68. And then he fought a whole bunch of people in between. First President to be assaulted while in office. First to have someone try and kill him in office. And now, long in the grave, his legacy fights to be known for more than slave-ownership and the infamous Trail of Tears. He was a polarizing man in his lifetime and had been even more polarizing in death. And we suck him today, on Timesuck! You probably won’t love everything about him but if you don’t respect at least some of the life he lived, well, then you’re just weren’t paying attention, today, on Timesuck! 105 - Nikola Tesla: A Strange and Beautiful Mind

Nikola Tesla. The prototypical "mad scientist". He slept only a few hours a night and devoted his life to science like none-other. A rags-to-riches-to-rags visionary who was a giant in the field of scientific invention, he created the first alternating current (AC) motor and was a pioneer in the field of wireless information transmission. He helped build the world’s first large-scale hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls. He even pushed scientific rival Thomas Edison into electrocuting pets to prove that his direct current technology was better and safer than Tesla’s alternating current. It was a AC versus DC, War of Currents nerd fight that lasted over a decade. He was also a strange man who fell in love with a pigeon and once claimed to have created a "death ray".
