Episode 59: The disappearance of PFC Richard Halliday

This week’s episode is about a young soldier named Richard Halliday who disappeared from Fort Bliss on July 24 2020. He is the son of Rob and Patricia Halliday. The family has had issues with the Army in their search for Richard. He is listed as AWOL and not missing which means he is considered a deserter and criminal.

The family knows this isn’t true. Patricia knows her son. He would never just walk away from his responsibilities and family without contacting them. He has family overseas, but none of them have reported seeing or hearing from Richard. They have had to do their own investigation into Richard’s disappearance. Patricia told me the local authorities won’t search for him because the Army has jurisdiction over him. And the Army won’t look for him because he’s considered a deserter. This has left the family in a quandary.

Listening to Patricia, it doesn’t sound likely that Richard walked away from his life. For one, he didn’t own a car and two he didn’t have any money. He also left his possessions behind. So how far would he have gotten without any money, a vehicle or his belongings?

Patricia doesn’t feel like her son is alive because she cannot believe he would go this long without contacting his family. She thinks it’s possible that he was killed within the confines of Fort Bliss or someplace nearby. No cameras picked up on him walking away from the base. So he couldn’t have just walked away unnoticed. Someone saw him and knows what happened to him. The family believes there are fellow soldiers who know more than what they are saying but may be fearful of saying anything.
