Episode 241: Save the Greenport Skatepark!

Rena Wilhelm is by no means a skateboarder. But when she heard an 11 year old boy wanted to fix the crumbling skatepark in Greenport, NY she answered the call.

She organized a nonprofit and a multitude of events to gather donations to give children and amateur skaters a safe place to practice skateboarding, scootering, BMX and rollerblading.

So far her nonprofit has collected $50,000 of their $100,000 goal to resurface and rebuild the park. While many skaters can remember middle age and elderly people chasing them away from spots or hurling insults, Greenport's residents and government want to help skaters find a safe place to skate and have become included in the tight nit skating community.
