Navigating Pediatric Policy in 2025

Safety and teamwork are second nature for pediatric providers. In medicine, we have long looked to the airline industry as a leader in the application of crisis response and as the ideal of high reliability. Coming from a shared reality that even the most experienced professionals are vulnerable to human error, both aviation and medical professionals rely on problem-solving strategies to optimize responses to critical incidents. In this episode we discuss the collaborative work of physicians at Children's Colorado's Heart Institute and Human Factors and Pilot Development leaders at United Airlines. Major breakthroughs have developed since we last visited the topic of Operation Warp Speed and the race for a COVID-19 vaccine. Pfizer’s vaccine candidate has shown to be 95 percent effective and Moderna’s has been similar at 94.5 percent, rivaling some of the most potent vaccines that we have. With vaccine candidates showing robust immune response there is mounting anticipation for a vaccination that could bring an end to the pandemic. This news comes as community spread of the virus is raging and hospitalizations have surged across the United States.  Sean O’Leary, MD is our guest for this episode. Dr. O'Leary is an Infectious Disease physician at Children’s Colorado and Director of the Colorado Pediatric Practice-Based Research Network. Sean is also a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics and can regularly be found quoted in publications like the New York Times.

The CDC estimates that at least 30 percent of antibiotic prescriptions dispensed from the outpatient setting are unnecessary. Providers working in primary care are perhaps the most influential healthcare providers in addressing the issue of antibiotic resistance, as the inappropriate antibiotic prescribing practices remain high. In this episode Sarah Parker, MD and Nicole Poole, MD join us to discuss the use of antimicrobial stewardship programs and how they be implemented in primary care. Dr. Parker is the Medical Director of Children’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and Professor of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
