Closing the 18-Inch Gap Podcast-EP040: Overcoming Your Inner Critic

Closing the 18-Inch Gap Podcast-EP040: Overcoming Your Inner Critic

We all have inner critics, voices so to speak that keep us from achieving our best selves. Some call them trolls. Even the most successful people you may know of have them. But did you know that the more successful you become, the louder these can become? Today I will explore with you 7 ways you can overcome these inner critics and set yourself up for the success you truly deserve!

But first the quote of the week:

Your inner critic is a bully. When you can tune out that noise, you can tune-in to your real inner voice. Your soul. Your spirit. Your purpose. THAT voice will never lie to you. Beth Caldwell

Points to covered:

7 Ways to Overcome the Inner Critic

1. Identify and Name the Inner Critic

  • The first step to overcoming your inner critic is recognizing when it's active. Pay attention to the negative thoughts and self-doubt that arise in your mind.
  • Awareness allows you to question its validity and take control of your narrative.

2. Challenge Negative Beliefs

  • The inner critic thrives on assumptions and exaggerated fears. Challenge these beliefs by asking yourself: "Is this really true?" or "What evidence supports this thought?"
  • Over time, you'll learn to rely on facts and possibilities rather than harsh self-judgment.

3. Practice Self-Compassion

  • Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a close friend.
  • Regularly practicing self-compassion rewires your inner dialogue to be more nurturing and encouraging.

4. Shift Your Focus to Strengths

  • The inner critic tends to highlight weaknesses and flaws, so intentionally focus on your strengths.
  • A strengths-focused mindset helps to drown out the negativity of the inner critic with affirming truths.

5. Set Realistic Expectations

  • Unrealistic expectations fuel the inner critic by setting you up for failure.
  • Learning to balance ambition with realism helps reduce self-criticism and build resilience.

6. Cultivate Mindfulness

  • Mindfulness teaches you to observe your thoughts without judgment, creating space between you and the inner critic.
  • This shift enables you to live in the present moment, free from the weight of self-criticism.

7. Seek Support and Accountability

  • Overcoming the inner critic is easier with the help of a supportive network.
  • A coach can also provide structured tools and strategies to reframe limiting beliefs and build long-lasting confidence.

Each of these steps empowers you to replace the inner critic's voice with a narrative of self-love, growth, and possibility.
