The Donna Adelson murder trial centers on the 2014 killing of Dan Markel, a Florida State University law professor, in a murder-for-hire allegedly orchestrated by the Adelsons. The state says motives stems from a custody dispute between Dan Markel and his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, which led to a bitter a legal battle over their two children. Prosecutors believe Donna Adelson, motivated by a desire to have Wendi and her grandchildren closer to her in South Florida, conspired with her son, Charlie Adelson, to have her ex son-in-law Dan Markel killed. Charlie Adelson was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation of murder in 2023 and sentenced to life in prison. Donna Adelson was arrested days later in November 2023 at Miami International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Vietnam, a country without extradition to the United States. She faces charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. Her trial is scheduled to begin in August of 2025.
