EP 16 - To beat or not to beat! (Jenny Okafor)

'Spare the rod, spoil the child' - what exactly does this mean? Is the word 'rod' to be taken literally and to mean a 'cane' or 'hands' or 'implements'. Does the phrase mean that if children are not disciplined by physical chastisement (beating or hitting), then they message is not driven home by parents? Could the phrase not be interpreted to simply mean that parents need to correct their children when they do wrong? Are there not other effective and loving ways of correcting children without hitting them? My guest Jenny Okafor and I discuss this issue and what the UK laws say about physical chastisement.
