How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

There is a lot of content out these days about attention, attention spans, and distraction. What is with the seemingly dramatic deficit we have with attention? I know for myself, I seem to look for distraction and struggle to focus, even when I’m greatly interested in what I’m working on. I make it harder for myself when I have access to all my internet connected devices. I’m bringing back a conversation I had with an expert on the matter. Dr Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami where she serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. Amishi’s work has been featured at NATO, the World Economic Forum, The Dalai Lama's Vision Summit, and The Pentagon. She has received coverage in The New York Times, NPR, TIME, Forbes and more. She is the author of the book, Peak Mind, which we discuss in this show. Amish has spent nearly 30 years researching the science of attention through extensive work with the US Military, medical professionals, elite sports teams, and more to address the issue. Her TED Talk on "How to Tame Your Wandering Mind" has nearly 6 million views. We spend every day tuned in to screens whose sole purpose is to get our attention, to the degree we now must make a focus on, “How do I get my own attention?” Our attention is in many ways, the only power we have. The only thing we have an influence and impact on, the only thing we can help or find success in or enjoy, is what we give out attention to. We all know the concept of budgeting our money, and our time. Now we’re faced with budgeting our attention, and if we can’t control our attention, all hope seems lost toward much progress in our lives. That’s why we have Amishi with us now. 395: Q&A Show: Deciding which idea to pursue and hard work is…hard

Dan Miller joins Kevin to cover two big issues. Beverly asks, “I love to do so many different things. How do I decide which one to take the BIG step into?” Then Robin in Mississippi says, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for saying how STUPID the cliché is, “If you do what you love you'll never work another day in your life". I love my work, but I work my backside off. I'm a nurse. I work at hospice. Everyone dies.” Tune in as we deeply unpack these two topics.   Learn more about your ad choices. 394: Carrie Wilkerson reveals the labels that bind, and free us

We all live under labels that were given to us, and many we gave to ourselves. Some gives us wings and roots! But more often than not, they limit us and hold us tight to far less than the possibility we have within us. It’s not as easy as simply saying, “Hey, I don’t think I’ll accept that label anymore!” When we live in a label for so long, getting rid of it is like learning a foreign language. In this show we get to the push and shove and challenge of really relabeling ourselves, and the massive power it can unleash. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

When you DON’T understand the dramatic power you really have, you become a victim. We break down this concept in the show and flesh it out so we can all take more appropriate action and responsibility in our lives.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

389: The necessity of having rewarding work

Name the definition of success for you? The specific realities, circumstances, ingredients and outcomes. It can’t be 100% altruistic, it must contain some personal desires. Zig gives us 15-minutes on stage discussing what we all want, how much our work life impacts everything, and the power of…love. Then I, Kevin, dig into the two primary topics. NEW SHOW! > Remember as you listen…when a question, idea, or frustration comes up, let us know! Go to ask.ZigShow.com. You’ll hear an excerpt from a submitted question in this show.
