How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

There is a lot of content out these days about attention, attention spans, and distraction. What is with the seemingly dramatic deficit we have with attention? I know for myself, I seem to look for distraction and struggle to focus, even when I’m greatly interested in what I’m working on. I make it harder for myself when I have access to all my internet connected devices. I’m bringing back a conversation I had with an expert on the matter. Dr Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami where she serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. Amishi’s work has been featured at NATO, the World Economic Forum, The Dalai Lama's Vision Summit, and The Pentagon. She has received coverage in The New York Times, NPR, TIME, Forbes and more. She is the author of the book, Peak Mind, which we discuss in this show. Amish has spent nearly 30 years researching the science of attention through extensive work with the US Military, medical professionals, elite sports teams, and more to address the issue. Her TED Talk on "How to Tame Your Wandering Mind" has nearly 6 million views. We spend every day tuned in to screens whose sole purpose is to get our attention, to the degree we now must make a focus on, “How do I get my own attention?” Our attention is in many ways, the only power we have. The only thing we have an influence and impact on, the only thing we can help or find success in or enjoy, is what we give out attention to. We all know the concept of budgeting our money, and our time. Now we’re faced with budgeting our attention, and if we can’t control our attention, all hope seems lost toward much progress in our lives. That’s why we have Amishi with us now. 326: Break down to build up

A powerful 10-minute message from Zig, from which we get this statement, "When you don’t have focus, you put energy into not losing what you have, and you don’t gain much. When you have focus you put energy into gain, and you can’t lose!” Then we share an intimate confession from Tom Ziglar on what really made his Dad the icon he grew to be. It's not what you'll expect to hear, at all. Our show was brought to you by next week's special guest, Jordan Harbinger of the famed ArtOfCharmPodcast.com. Learn more about your ad choices. 325: What’s in the way of your hope?

325: What’s in the way of your hope?

We posed this question to our 3.5 million Ziglar Facebook Fanpage audience, and got a wealth of responses. I (Kevin) picked groups of similar replies and posed them to Tom Ziglar and Dan Miller. What came out was one of the deeper shows to date. No doubt, you’ll find a response you can relate to. I also gave a charge to one unreasonable person…to mentor them through an upcoming Ziglar Legacy Certification course. Listen in…and change your life.  Learn more about your ad choices. 324: Knowing when to stick it out or move on elsewhere

324: Knowing when to stick it out or move on elsewhere

When you are in a negative environment, when do you know to stick it out, endure, tolerate and remain…and when should you get out of there?! There is no cookie cutter answer. But in this show we had Bob Beaudine in the office to get to the nitty gritty on this issue. Bob is a renowned Ziglar champion, and the man who Sports Illustrated called, “the top front-office matchmaker in sports”. We listen to a 3-minute clip from Bob, then break it down. He starts off saying, “Life isn’t often fair.” From that, we discussed 3 points, 1) When you get rejected and put down and minimized, you may be on the wrong team, in the wrong crowd, at the wrong company, 2) Rejection can be a reminder of who you are and who you are not, 3) Go where you’re celebrated, not where you’re tolerated. You’ll be inspired, and get a paradigm shift. This show was brought to you by Harry’s Razors - Harrys.com - get a $5 discount by entering ZIGLAR into the coupons code. 323: Your future, your success - equals the size of your hope. You must have more.

323: Your future, your success - equals the size of your hope. You must have more.

John Johnson said, “It’s the size of your hope that’s going to determine how far you’ll go in your life.” John Maxwell said, “If there’s hope in the future there’s power in the present.” The focus of this show is, You Need More Hope. You need to increase it and enhance it and establish it. I, your host Kevin Miller, took more notes on this 13-minute clip from Zig than any show so far. Thus the longer show where Tom Ziglar and I cover some significant ground. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
