072: How To Bring Self-Compassion To The Habits In Your Life & How To Make Them Stick with Erin Galloway

Are you someone who has a difficult time when it comes to forming habits? Is your inner critic telling you you’ve failed when you didn’t accomplish everything you wanted to in your day? If that’s the case, it’s not the truth! We’re all unique people which means we all have different styles of forming habits. In this episode, I had a conversation with Erin Galloway, a habit master, about creating habits, understanding your signature system, and the best approach to sustaining healthy habits in your life!

Erin Galloway’s entire career has been focused on behavior change and how small choices add up to have a big impact. Much of her work has been in supporting families, communities, and schools in building healthy environments that lead to long-term, multi-generational wellbeing.

Erin is inspired to spark curiosity in people of all ages, stages, and abilities. Through Habitize Publishing, a self-publishing company started with her elementary-aged daughter, Erin helps to elevate the voices of those who only dreamed of writing "published author" next to their name. Erin finds joy in helping people realize they are capable of more than they think they are.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Developing healthy habits is important. Think of habits in a positive sense. Habits improve our quality of life and can help with healing and serve us in a wide variety of ways.
  • We often don’t have compassion for ourselves when forming new habits. It’s important to give ourselves patience and grace. Try using the “Good, Better, Best” system. Come up with 6 habits that make up a “best” day and wind it down from there. That way, if you accomplish 2 habits in your day, it’s good. If you accomplish 4 habits, it’s better. If you accomplish all 6, it’s the best!
  • Be realistic. Everyday is not going to be perfect. Give yourself space to be human. Everyone is different so create habits that work best for you to set yourself up for a successful day!

Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn’t lighting them up, and what they did to change that. Join us every week for a new episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins!
