Kun Nathan Carman joutui äitinsä Lindan kanssa veneonnettomuuteen, viranomaisten epäilykset heräsivät heti Nathanin pelastautumisen jälkeen. Nathanin kertoma tarina siitä miten kaikki oli tapahtunut, ei vaikuttanut uskottavalta. Vielä enemmän asia alkoi epäilyttää poliiseja, kun he saivat selville että muutamia vuosia aikaisemmin myös Nathanin isoisä oli kuollut epäselvissä olosuhteissa ja Nathania oli kuulusteltu myös tähän liittyen.
