S05 E03 – Political Theory: An Introduction: Politics, Government, and the State

Chapter 3 investigates how political theory defines and differentiates politics, government, and the state—three concepts that often seem interchangeable but carry distinct meanings and implications.

We explore how politics can be narrowly defined as the activities of government, or more broadly as any process involving power, conflict, or decision-making in human society. The episode then turns to government—its functions, legitimacy, and evolution—highlighting how authority is structured in different systems from monarchies to modern liberal democracies.

Finally, we examine the state as a distinct entity from government, discussing competing theories that explain its purpose and power. From liberal ideas of the state as a neutral arbiter, to pluralist visions of interest-group balance, elitist concerns about concentrated power, and Marxist critiques of class domination, this chapter lays the groundwork for understanding the machinery behind political life.
