571: Pastor Past Makes You An Outcast | Feedback Friday

As an exemplary member of the clergy for 29 years, you'd think honesty to your superiors would be rewarded unconditionally. Alas, when you disclosed a need to seek counseling during a rough patch between you and your spouse (which resulted in a stronger relationship), you were unceremoniously booted from your position. Now you can't find work at another church because you've been unfairly branded a pariah among those of your faith, and you can't find a job among the secular because your clerical past seems to be a turn-off to potential employers. What can you do? We'll try to find an answer to this and more here on Feedback Friday!

And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in!

On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss:
  • Honesty got you kicked out of the clergy, and the seculars seem turned off by your pastor past. Who will hire you now? [Thanks to Pastor Brad Mortensen for helping us with this one!]
  • Thanks to an accidental pocket dial after calling your parents to ask for a loan, you overheard exactly what your mother thinks of you -- and it wasn't favorable. Yet she's never hesitated to call you when she needs help. Is it unreasonable to cut toxic family members out of your life?
  • You're a fully booked hairstylist at your sister-in-law's salon, and feel it's time to branch out on your own after 20 years. But you'd be bringing along another fully booked stylist, which would ultimately hurt your sister-in-law's business. Is there a way to follow opportunity without leaving family in the lurch?
  • You love your job, but you find the constant interruptions that come with it challenging your ability to stay on task. What can you do to stay focused?
  • You run a junior developer meetup; most people come through, build technical and interpersonal confidence, and leave when they get jobs, but there are some people who have been coming back week after week for years. These folks are generally technically proficient, but lack in the social skills department. How can you proactively add social skills training without coming across as some kind of jerk?

94: This Is the Vulnerable Truth about Vulnerability | Deep Dive

Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) joins us for this deep dive into vulnerability -- what it really is, why it can't be faked, and how to spot it in ourselves and others to make real connections while avoiding manipulation by those who don't always have our best interests at heart. What We Discuss with Gabriel Mizrahi: How to resist the pervasive Cult of Vulnerability that exists even in the most well-meaning of circles today. Why vulnerability doesn't respond to exercises, requests, or expectations, no matter how hard you try. What happens when you try to force vulnerability -- from yourself or someone else. How to tell the difference between authentic and strategic vulnerability. When being vulnerable is appropriate and when it isn't -- and how to ensure we're calibrating it accordingly. 93: Jocko Willink | Leading on the Line Between Extreme and Reckless

Jocko Willink (@jockowillink) rejoins us to discuss his latest book, The Dichotomy of Leadership: Balancing the Challenges of Extreme Ownership to Lead and Win. What We Discuss with Jocko Willink: What happens when we take the "extreme" part of extreme ownership too literally. Why otherwise positive characteristics can be detrimental to progress when we forget the importance of balance. When to take responsibility, and what the limits of this actually are. Why we should stop being the easy button for those we manage and lead. The concept of leadership capital: how to build it, when to use it, and when not to use it. And much more... Why does Jordan study Mandarin? You've been invited to lunch with an executive in your company. How can you make a lasting -- but natural -- impression? Confused about what qualifies as talent stacking (aka skill stacking)? Here's some clarification, courtesy of Ed Latimore. What's your best next move to break out of your post-college rut: teaching abroad or joining the military? Looking for a mentor? Don't forget to apply The Generosity Principle as Jordan taught in this three-part Instagram series: Part 1, 2, and 3 and Six-Minute Networking. What are some steps you can take now, while you're making pretty good money, to work toward your goals? You might be great at forgiving other people, but how can you forgive yourself -- or help someone else forgive themselves? 90: Jonathan Haidt | The Danger of Good Intentions and Safe Spaces

Jonathan Haidt (@JonHaidt) is a social psychologist who studies the American culture wars and is widely considered to be one of the world's leading experts on the psychology of morality. He is the co-author of The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure. What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt: Why should we be preparing the child for the road and not the road for the child? How the concepts of safe spaces and trigger warnings are making our society less safe and less prepared for the real world. What we should be doing instead to prepare ourselves and our kids for reality. Cognitive distortions and how we become victims of our own flawed mindsets. The three fundamental untruths being perpetuated by academia and the media and how we can fight these influences. And much more... If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now, let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: You need to increase your salary so you can adequately provide for your family, but you're not sure your current employer will go for it. Is it time to let go of your dream job? How can you ease the overwhelming loneliness of being on your own for the first time when you're anxious and miss your old life -- especially when the job that moved you to the big city just isn't as interesting as it used to be? Can a man from a blue collar background and a woman who grew up used to the finer things in life build a life together that allows him to feel like a provider without disappointing her expectations? When you're the youngest in a family business that isn't doing so well, how can you tell the other partners -- who once were your mentors and idols -- to level up their mindset and work ethics or else everything will crash and burn? Or is it just time for the family business to crash and burn? What should you do about this habit you have of talking over people? How can you promote yourself without, in weatherman parlance, sending the eye-rolling barometers into the storm zone? How can you learn to have a fluid conversation with people when you're constantly feeling less than? Recommendation of the Week: Zion Quick shoutouts to Simon from Montreal and Timm! 88: Charles Ryu | Confessions of a North Korean Escape Artist Part Two

Charles Ryu (@freshprinceofpyongyang) escaped from North Korea -- twice -- and now works with Liberty in North Korea to fight for the rights and freedom of those who have been left behind. This is part two of a two-part episode. Check out part one here! What We Discuss with Charles Ryu: The risky train ride that began Charles' escape to freedom. How the swift current of a freezing river likely saved Charles' life. What Charles did once he got to China with no money, food, or water. The chance encounter with a good samaritan and the circuitous path that led to the United States. Why winding up in a Thai prison was the best day of Charles' life up to that point. And much more... 87: General Michael Hayden | National Security in an Age of Lies

General Michael Hayden (@GenMhayden) is a retired United States Air Force general, former Director of the CIA and NSA, and author of The Assault on Intelligence: American National Security in an Age of Lies. What We Discuss with General Michael Hayden: Why the current administration revoking security clearance of dissenting intelligence leadership is a big deal -- and why General Hayden believes it sets a precedent that threatens national security. The phenomenon of the unpleasant fact knows no political allegiance. Why it's imperative that we know how to tell uncomfortable truths in any field -- whether we're intelligence agents, business owners, or team members. How intelligence agents and operators at the highest levels of power in government create and maintain relationships and handle sensitive conflicts. An inside look at the game of espionage and why it's a crucial force for those of us who live in a democracy. And much more...
