Ep154: Ian Baker-Finch retires, Cam Young's Killer Final Day for his First PGA Tour Win, and a Royal Melbourne 'Open Update'

Fun pod today. Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen kick it off by discussing our reworked set - still at Titleist and FootJoy HQ but in a different space.....a change is as good as a holiday. Speaking of holidays, tickets are selling well for our Talk Birdie To Me Golf Day at Links Golf and Wellbeing on the Gold Coast on October 8th, after being on sale for about 5-days, nearly a third of the tickets are sold, so the day will sell out - we'd love to see you there, tickets available here.

We discuss the domination of the Asia Pacific region in womens golf at the moment, with a new number one in the world in Jeeno Thitikul, and Nick and Mark discuss why they are dominating. Work ethic is a clear standout reason according to the boys. Nick suggests getting Jan Stephenson on the pod as a guest. Steph Kyriacou played well in tough conditions at the weekend, and one particular shot involving her was extraordinary, we discuss.

And the retirement of a legend. Ian Baker-FInch, what a career, Nick and Mark love what he has done and how good he is. Although missing the discussion about IBF due to the international feed being delivered into Australia was very disappointing - Mark has had enough and says 'we are missing so much' by being given the international feed. Nick says Jim Nance is the best in the business, and he's one that he wants to hear, rather than the international feed team.

In the chat about IBF we also find out that Mark is a tight-arse. And we discuss who might replace IBF, Frank Nobilo the consensus choice from Nick and Mark.

Cam Young, a great win at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina, and a fantastic final round (after a tough first hole) to win his first ever PGA tournament. We discuss that final round. Nick is reminded of playing this tournament and described it as the greatest cut he ever made, and tells the story of why.

Update on Royal Melbourne's preparation for the Australian Open. It's good news, and Mark is pleased to have heard it and to pass it on.

Last week we had a voicemail from wolfpacker Tom in Arizona, and Mark decided to give Tom some homework - this is what the podcast has become, we're giving homework to wolfpackers, we really are quite disgraceful. Nonetheless, Tom delivers in spades with a ripping Top 5 desert courses in Arizona, with rationale for each. During the turn, Mark has been on google looking at Tom's number 1 course, and he decides that he needs to visit Arizona to play it. We'd like to be in the room when Mark asks his wife for permission to fly to Arizona to play a round of golf. Onto the Top 5, Mark lists the 5 things that The Australian Open needs to have implemented to make it as good as it can be, and as good as it used to be.

Breaking news - next week we'll have a bonus pod chatting to Steve Williams, former caddy of Tiger, about his new book - and he will personally sign a copy to one wolfpacker. How do you win? Well we want your questions to ask Steve, what would you like us to ask on your behalf? We'll choose three and put all three to Steve, and Nick will vote on the best question to win the signed book. Let us know on socials, or message us through the Talk Birdie website here. Our bonus pod with Steve will be later next week.

Nick runs through the PING globals from the weekend, and we have plenty of feedback to run through. Amongst other things we talk ball fitting, equipment evolution, blades vs hollow clubs, and a couple of suggestions for other players who didn't live up to their potential.

And a reminder that later this week we'll do our review pod on Happy Gilmore 2!

We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:

Ep71: Marko on 'the Worst Coach I Ever Had', Nick's Masterclass on Hitting Out of the Long Rough

Ep71: Marko on 'the Worst Coach I Ever Had', Nick's Masterclass on Hitting Out of the Long Rough

After yesterday's big bonus pod with Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland, today is the normal pod - 24 hours later than usual, but hopefully you enjoyed the chat with James. If you haven't heard it, have a listen.Plenty on today's show. Nick has just come back from playing Long Island in zero degree temperatures, thankfully he has a shiny new clothing sponsor to keep him warm. Cutter and Buck if you must know. Mark raises golf course renovations, specifically why they do them so slowly (ie: 9 holes at a time). We've got a poll up on twitter here, love your thoughts.Mark also names the worst golf coach he ever had. And then, without any sense of irony, goes on to outline a fantastic tip that this coach gave him. And Nick admits to something that he did on a golf course that he has never told anyone.Nick and Mark discuss yesterday's bonus pod with James Sutherland and how much they enjoyed it, they are particularly pleased that James seems to be aiming high and thinking big.....two words resonated with them: 'Rolex Series'. We can dream.Marks turn for the Top 5 this week and what initially felt like a filler Top 5 that he'd given zero thought to actually turned out to be pretty good.Nick has a great fun fact on the legendary Bernhard Langer, and runs through some great results in the PING global results - not the least of which was a fantastic #2 finish from David Micheluzzi on the DP World Tour. Some fantastic feedback including more comments on our bonus pod a couple of weeks ago with Jonathan Yarwood - and a mate of Nicks took up the invite to get some advice from Jonathan via Skillest with brilliant results. And a great masterclass from Nick, requested by Talk Birdie listener Peter Riley on hitting out of the long rough. And finally an apology. Into the turn today Mark, for reasons best known to himself, decided to tell a joke. It was awful. We're embarrassed. We considered not airing it, but he insisted. And that means you need to hear it, for which we cannot apologise enough. The only thing that will prevent a reoccurrence is a reality check via feedback, so let us know on socials, leave a voicemail, whatever you prefer.....but our heartfelt apologies for this misstep.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners, who we hope will forgive Marks joke:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Ep70: Mark: "PIF, PGA, DPWT & SSG Soon to Join", and Nick is Annoyed Over a Listener Comment

We kick off today's podcast by listening to some audio that was not on our bingo card this week. We would not have expected what happened to happen.Once we get through that, we chat Cam Davis. Wow. A wonderful performance in Detroit, Nick and Mark discuss how well he played. We nearly had an all Aussie finish with Min Woo in the hunt for a while. Nick felt sorry for Akshay Bhatia who was very unlucky. Nick tells Mark about how Cameron Young broke his driver on the back nine. Funny.Mark brings up Andrew Tschudin, who is Cam Davis' caddie, and Mark says that he was an exceptional player himself, and he compares one aspect of his game to Stuart Appleby. We have a suggestion from a listener Pete who wants to see Cam Davis vs Nick O'Hern in matchplay, but with a twist.Nick and Mark discuss Frank Bensel Jr making back to back Aces at the weekend, leading to a fun chat about Hole in Ones, and a particularly funny story from Mark about one of his. Nick tells a story about one of his hole in one's in Singapore. We discuss Rory's caddie, Harry Diamond, and a video that Mark has seen highlighting the moments where Harry may have given Rory the wrong club and cost him. Nick and Mark discuss who they'd love to see on the bag for Rory.Australian Open update. It's a bit 'boy who cried wolf' but Mark is convinced an announcement will come this week about the venue, and the structure. He also says that a coming together of the PIF, PGA, the DPWT, and Strategic Sports Group is well underway and will be done by the end of 2024.Nick counts down his Top 5 best conditioned golf courses in the world, of those that he has seen.As usual lots of feedback, plenty of comments - including one from Talk Birdie listener Jim that gets Nick quite riled up.Lots of great results for the Aussies this week in the PING global results, obviously Cam Davis leading the way with a fantastic performance. Then we get a voicemail with a ripping question for Nick and Mark. And we wrap the show with a Mark Allen masterclass on hip turns.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. 🏌🏿‍♂️Bonus: Super Coach Jonathan Yarwood: 'Golf is Artistic, Not Scientific'

🏌🏿‍♂️Bonus: Super Coach Jonathan Yarwood: 'Golf is Artistic, Not Scientific'

This is a cracking bonus podcast, Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen chat with one of the worlds leading golf coaches, Jonathan Yarwood from New York. And the pod gets off to an unexpected start when Jonathan reveals that when he was younger he wanted to be Mark Allen, he explains why. We originally thought he was ripping the piss, but no it turns out to be true!Jonathan has coached some of the worlds great players - Michael Campbell, Nelly Korda, Jessie Korda - to name a few, and he tells us about working with each of those and some of the areas of their respective games that he was tasked with helping address. He also talks about how the internet has both assisted in developing golfers, but at the same time causes problems as it can validate almost anything you want to believe. Jonathan talks about the role technology plays in his coaching and says that, ironically, he uses technology to get less technical.Jonathan explains his theory of 'Search / Improve' and why it can be dangerous for golf pros.He also talks about some of the work he does with Paige Spiranac, commenting that she is an excellent golfer, Nick agrees. And in great news, if you'd like Jonathan to have a look at your swing, he's happy to do so (a cost involved, but a very reasonable one), you can find him on Skillest here, or visit Jonathan's website here. He comes highly recommended by both Nick and Mark.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear.
