The reality is that structured incident response isn’t optional anymore. Article 73 slaps a 72-hour window on reporting high-risk AI incidents. You’d better have incident documentation, automated alerting, and legal teams on speed dial, or you’re exposing your organization to financial and reputational wipeout. Marching alongside enforcement are the national competent authorities, beefed-up with new tech expertise, standing ready to audit your compliance on the ground. Above them, the freshly minted AI Office wields centralized power, with real sanctions in hand and the task of wrangling 27 member states into regulatory harmony.

Perhaps most interesting for the technorati is the voluntary Code of Practice for general-purpose AI, published last month. Birthed by a consortium of nearly 1,000 stakeholders, this code is a sandbox for “soft law.” Some GPAI providers are snapping it up, hoping it’ll curry favor with regulators or future-proof their risk strategies. Others eye it skeptically—worrying it might someday morph into binding obligations by stealth.

Like all first drafts of epochal laws, expect turbulence. The debate on innovation versus regulation is fierce—some say it’s a straitjacket, others argue it finally tethers the wild west of AI in Europe to something resembling societal accountability. For project managers, compliance is no longer an afterthought—it’s core to adding value and avoiding existential risk.
