Cincinnati - Is tennis losing a generation?

Cincinnati - Is tennis losing a generation?

Catherine, David and Matt are back to talk about the opening stages of Cincinnati which has seen brutal temperatures, a power outage, and plenty of compelling tennis too.

Part one - ATP Results. We start by taking stock of the careers of Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud after their struggles continued. There’s also Lorenzo Musetti’s poor form on hard courts, both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz immediately going out to practise after their latest victories, another tricky week for Joao Fonseca, and a surprise defeat for Alex de Minaur.

Part two - WTA Results (45m45s). The match of the tournament so far was Aryna Sabalenka’s three hour victory over Emma Raducanu. We discuss Sabalenka’s phenomenal tiebreak record, really encouraging signs for Raducanu, and our impressions of the early glimpses of her coaching partnership with Francisco Roig. There’s also Madison Keys saving match points to win yet again and Amanda Anisimova losing to Anna Kalinskaya.

Part three - Details of our live show in Wrexham on Wednesday 22nd October!

US Open Day 7 - Gauff’s double trouble; Record late finish is nothing to celebrate

US Open Day 7 - Gauff’s double trouble; Record late finish is nothing to celebrate

Defending champion Coco Gauff is out of the US Open after hitting 19 double faults in a three set loss to Emma Navarro. In part one of the pod, we discuss the match and ponder what’s next for Gauff as she looks to rebuild her game. In part two, we cover the latest ever finish to a women’s match at the US Open as Zheng Qinwen beat Donna Vekic at 2.15am. Catherine, David and Matt were all in the stadium and there’s reaction to Zheng’s phenomenal performance as well as the absurdity of the situation. Elsewhere, there’s chat about Grigor Dimitrov’s up and down win over Andrey Rublev, a preview of Taylor Fritz vs Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals, analysis of France’s Tiafoe’s performance in a good win over Alexei Popyrin, and praise for Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka as they charge through the draw. US Open Day 5 - Djokovic follows Alcaraz through exit door; Sabalenka, Gauff roar back

Chaos! It’s happening! One wild night on Arthur Ashe Stadium turned into two as Novak Djokovic followed Carlos Alcaraz out of the tournament. Catherine, David and Matt react to Djokovic's performance which he described as one of his worst ever, praise Alexei Popyrin for the biggest win of his career, and analyse what it means for the rest of the draw. Elsewhere, there's the customary Grand Slam rant about the scheduling as Aryna Sabalenka and Ekaterina Alexandrova walked onto court at past midnight and much discussion of big wins for Frances Tiafoe and Coco Gauff. US Open Day 4 - Alcaraz out; Botic Van de Zandschulp, what did you do!?

Carlos Alcaraz is out of the US Open. The Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion was beaten in straight sets by Botic van de Zandschulp on a shocking night on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Catherine, David and Matt watched every ball and went to Alcaraz's press conference. What went wrong? Just how impressive was Van de Zandschulp? How did Alcaraz explain his performance? And what does it mean for the rest of the tournament? We discuss all of that, as well as Karolina Muchova's victory over Naomi Osaka, the withdrawal of Elena Rybakina, Jannik Sinner brushing off criticism from Nick Kyrgios, and so much more on a seismic day in New York.
