Shallow reverse faulting along the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone triggered the quake, and more than fifty magnitude five or greater tremors, including a magnitude seven point four forequake, preceded it. There, U.S. scientists will collaborate with peers worldwide to discuss Antarctic geology, ice sheet-climate dynamics, and related ecosystem changes. Meanwhile, major submarine canyons have just been mapped beneath Antarctic ice, revealing a hidden network whose origins trace back to ancient glaciers, according to ScienceDaily. These discoveries emphasize the far-reaching importance of Earth science in understanding both hazards and resources, as well as the interconnectedness of the global geological system.
