#829: SEO 101: An SEO Beginner's Guide to On-Site & Off-Site SEO Episode 1

SEO is the process of making your site more visible, more authoritative, and easier for Google's web crawlers to understand. There are three main areas of optimization: on-site, off-site, and content marketing. I'll cover most of the "technical" elements that you'll need to consider for your campaign. Google uses automated bots to continually search the web for new page entries. There are three main approaches you can take for search indexing. In the passive approach, you'll simply wait for Google to index your site.

The active approach allows you to update the URL structures and hierarchies on your site using an on-site site map. You'll need to create an XML sitemap and a robots.txt file for your site to tell Google's crawlers what to look at on your site. These files can be created using Notepad, WordPress, or any program that allows you to create TXT files. You may want bots to index all pages of your site by default. If so, you don't need a robots.txt file.

Google penalizes only 1% of sites for slow site speed. Every one-second increase in site speed is associated with a 2% increase in conversions. Whether you're after higher rankings or more conversions, it's a good idea to improve your site speed. Use a good caching plugin and limit the number of plugins on your site. Compress what you can to make your files load faster using an automated compression program like GZip.
