Who Killed Stephen Smith? Part Six (S01E61)

Investigative Journalist Mandy Matney discusses the Stephen Smith case, highlighting the 2194-day wait for justice and the reopening of the investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in 2021 after alluding to finding new evidence in their investigation of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh's murders. Smith was found dead on July 8, 2015, on Sandy Run Road, with no apparent evidence of a vehicle accident. The investigation was chaotic from the beginning, with inconsistencies in evidence handling and witness interviews. In February 2019, Mallory Beach was killed in Beaufort County, South Carolina as a result of a horrific boat crash on Archers Creek near Parris Island. Paul Murdaugh was indicted for Boating Under The Influence Resulting In Death among other charges and awaiting trial. On this episode, investigative journalist Mandy Matney takes an initial dive into case files to find out what went wrong in that investigation and how its connected to the Murdaugh Murders of 2021. Learn the details of events leading up to the crash, including Paul Murdaugh's intoxication and erratic behavior. In 2015, Stephen Smith was killed in Hampton County, South Carolina and the case remains unsolved... On this second installment of the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, investigative Journalist Mandy Matney discusses the Stephen Smith case, highlighting the 2180 days his family has waited for justice.  We detail the chaotic 2015 investigation, noting the lack of evidence suggesting a hit-and-run, despite a pathologist's ruling. Smith's body was found with severe head trauma, but no other significant injuries.  The case was complicated by jurisdictional issues and conflicting reports.
