The California Medfly Attack

"State officials have probably noticed an increase as well as an unusual distribution of Medfly infestation in Los Angeles County since March 1989. This was no coincidence."

The Mediterranean fruit fly, better known as the medfly, is about as unassuming as an insect can get. But the pest, native to sub-Saharan Africa, comes with enormous stakes. The medfly can infest more than 200 plant species, proving to be a nightmare for farmers everywhere. For farmers in California, though, they're an existential threat. That's why state officials treat every sighting like a five-alarm fire.

California has been fighting medfly invasions since the mid-1970s, throwing everything at them in an attempt to save their billion dollar agricultural industry. But in 1989, a strange outbreak of medflies were reported in Los Angeles and Orange counties. They appeared in clusters, as if they'd been placed there on purpose. Before long, a mysterious group calling themselves "The Breeders" claimed responsibility for this act of eco-terror...

West Mesa Bone Collector (Part Three: 118th Street Homicides)

West Mesa Bone Collector (Part Three: 118th Street Homicides)

In the decade since eleven bodies were found in Albuquerque, a task force has worked to identify the mysterious West Mesa Bone Collector. The 118th Street Task Force is a combination of officers from Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, and the FBI. Together, they have worked exhaustively to identify and apprehend the unknown killer of eleven women, who murdered and buried them over a roughly two-year period between 2003 and 2005. Over the past ten years, detectives have thoroughly investigated numerous suspects (including two that are still suspected of involvement today), looked into thousands of tips, and have even tentatively tied other missing women to the same crime spree. Yet, despite their best intentions, police have been unable to close the case dubbed the "118th Street Homicides." West Mesa Bone Collector (Part Two: The War Zone)

West Mesa Bone Collector (Part Two: The War Zone)

Through 2009, police would continue to unearth a mass grave along the western edge of Albuquerque. Following the discovery of eleven female bodies, investigators set out to identify the remains. The first four victims - Victoria Chavez, Michelle Valdez, Cinnamon Elks, and Julie Nieto - would be identified within the first month or so. They were all young women that had lived in the region and had gone missing between 2004 and 2005 (who had prior histories of sex work and drug use). However, the remaining seven victims would be much harder to ID. It took several months for investigators to piece together the details of these women's tragic lives, but the exact circumstances of their disappearances/murders would be hard to grasp. Years later, police continue to have many questions about these women, and who had targeted them... West Mesa Bone Collector (Part One: The Pit)

On February 2nd, 2009, a woman walking her dog would stumble upon the largest crime scene in Albuquerque history. In the years prior, this once-desolate corner of ABQ had been ground zero for rapid expansion. Housing developments had been popping up left and right, but the 2008 recession caused a vast amount of land to remain undeveloped: in particular, a roughly 100-acre lot located just west of 118th Street. While out on an evening stroll, a woman's dog would unearth a human bone. Before long, police had begun excavating what would be the largest crime scene in Albuquerque history. Within a month, they had identified four of the victims (all were sex workers that had gone missing years prior) but several more remained unidentified... as did their collective killer... Larry Chism

Larry Chism

In July of 1974, a young college student from Memphis State University was sentenced to 40 years in state prison for his involvement in an illegal narcotics ring. Larry Chism was a bright, unassuming young man who was nearing his graduation from law school when he was arrested and thrown into prison... a sentence that many assumed would consume a large chunk of his life. However, Larry had other plans. This sentence was merely a setback for him. Between September and December of 1978, Larry would cook up two separate escape attempts: one from state prison, and another from a county jail (as he await sentencing). In the 40+ years since, federal investigators have nearly caught up to Chism on multiple occasions, but he has managed to elude them at each turn. He has since become the longest-lasting fugitive on the US Marshals Most Wanted list... Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal Whelan Special thanks to Tim Fraley with the USMS, as well as his associates Victor, Adrian, and Rachael. Judy Weichert

Judy Weichert

On the morning of July 28th, 1984, Judy Weichert set off on a jog, unaware that it would be her last.Judy, a 33-year-old Oklahoma native, had been married to her husband for less than a year. The two were happy together, and seemed to have built a nice life for themselves in OKC. However, on this random Saturday morning, it would all fall apart. While out on her jog, Judy would be attacked by a vicious stranger. After being raped and stabbed numerous times, Judy was left for dead... yet she would cling to life long enough to tell a witness a few details about the man that had killed her. Police would link her case to another nearby, but more than 35 years later, Judy's case remains unsolved. Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal Whelan Special thanks to Rachael Smith and Mandi Newland Davis, who were kind enough to chat with me about Judy's still-unsolved case.
