The California Medfly Attack

"State officials have probably noticed an increase as well as an unusual distribution of Medfly infestation in Los Angeles County since March 1989. This was no coincidence."

The Mediterranean fruit fly, better known as the medfly, is about as unassuming as an insect can get. But the pest, native to sub-Saharan Africa, comes with enormous stakes. The medfly can infest more than 200 plant species, proving to be a nightmare for farmers everywhere. For farmers in California, though, they're an existential threat. That's why state officials treat every sighting like a five-alarm fire.

California has been fighting medfly invasions since the mid-1970s, throwing everything at them in an attempt to save their billion dollar agricultural industry. But in 1989, a strange outbreak of medflies were reported in Los Angeles and Orange counties. They appeared in clusters, as if they'd been placed there on purpose. Before long, a mysterious group calling themselves "The Breeders" claimed responsibility for this act of eco-terror...

Robert Levinson

Robert Levinson

For more than two decades, Robert Levinson served as a law enforcement agent specializing in money laundering and other financial crimes. Originally a member of the DEA, Levinson took his talents to the FBI, where he developed a reputation as a man who could develop informants like no other. In 1998, Levinson retired to chase money in the private sector, but within a decade was right back in the thick of things. Recruited by some former colleagues in the CIA, Levinson was brought in to do what he did best: make connections and harvest information. Approaching the typical age of retirement, Levinson finally had his dream job. He had virtually no rules, and could act as his own boss. However, he soon set his sights on the largest target of his professional career: a potential informant in Iran - the "black hole" of American intelligence. Unfortunately, this would prove too much of a challenge for Levinson, and he has been missing for more than a decade... The Brabant Killers (Update #2)

The Brabant Killers (Update #2)

Between 1982 and 1985, a group of three gunmen terrorized the Brabant region of Belgium. Now, police have begun to focus their attention on a group of police officers that may have interfered in the investigation. Just days after their arrest, one of their colleagues - another retired detective named Roger Romelart - took his own life... Bardstown - Revisited (Part Five: Daniel Cahoe)

Bardstown - Revisited (Part Five: Daniel Cahoe)

From 2013 to 2016, a series of high-profile crimes shook the region of Bardstown, Kentucky. But predating all of them was a mysterious murder. Daniel Cahoe was a 34-year old father, who was known to live as a bit of a drifter. Kindhearted and simple-minded, Daniel was known for his helpful spirit and his love of the outdoors. On January 5th, 2012, Daniel's remains were found in a barn out in rural Spencer County. Police and loved ones had no idea how Daniel had gotten out there - or why he had done so - but his death has left investigators bewildered in the years since... This is the fifth episode in a new Unresolved series, Bardstown - Revisited. I originally covered some Bardstown stories back in 2016, but have yet to touch upon Daniel's story. Bardstown - Revisited (Interlude: The Mayors)

Many continue to believe that there is corruption running amok throughout Bardstown, and that it starts all the way at the top; in positions like Mayor, where seemingly small changes can have long-term ramifications. This is a brief interlude in my new Unresolved series, Bardstown - Revisited, which is taking a second look at stories I originally covered back in 2016. Bardstown - Revisited (Part Four: Tommy Ballard)

Bardstown - Revisited (Part Four: Tommy Ballard)

Through 2015 and 2016, the region of Bardstown was marshaled behind one family as they fought to find their missing loved one: Crystal Rogers. The patriarch of this family, 54-year old Tommy Ballard, was no stranger to tragedy. He had endured the loss of a sister in his early adulthood, and had worked hard to ensure the safety and happiness of his family in the years since. In November of 2016, Tommy Ballard was just as active in the search for his daughter as ever. However, his mysterious death would spark the fourth major incident to shake Bardstown is as many years... This is the fourth part of a new Unresolved series, Bardstown - Revisited. I originally touched upon Tommy's story back in November of 2016, but have expanded upon it significantly, and have rewritten/rerecording everything.Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.me/ If you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a PatronMusic Creditshow the night came - "IV - C6H807"Percival Pembroke - "Atlantic Necropolis"Kai Engel - "Sunset"Kay - "Call of the Void"Rest You Sleeping Giant - "Open Eyes"The Gateless Gate - "Approaching Snow Squall"Sergey Cheremisinov - "Sleepwalker III"Other music created and composed by Ailsa TravesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

Bardstown - Revisited (Interlude: Sherry Ballard Barnes)

Several decades before the disappearance of Crystal Rogers, her family went through an eerily-identical tragedy. On January 19th, 1979, Sherry Ballard Barnes - Crystal's aunt - went missing. Her estranged husband would later be implicated, and charged in the deaths of both Sherry and her unborn child... Bardstown - Revisited (Part Three: Crystal Rogers)

Bardstown - Revisited (Part Three: Crystal Rogers)

On July 3rd, 2015, Crystal Rogers was last seen by anyone. She had been planning to spend the evening with her boyfriend, Brooks Houck, and had excitingly told a friend about finally enjoying a child-free night. Crystal, a mother of five, had been dating Brooks for a few years. The two had one child together (an infant son named Eli), and even though their relationship wasn't perfect, it seemed okay from the outside looking in. When Crystal's maroon Chevy Impala was found along the Bluegrass Parkway two days later, Crystal was reporting missing. Her disappearance would spark the third major criminal investigation in as many years, and - to this day - Crystal's whereabouts remain unknown. This is the third part of a new Unresolved series, Bardstown - Revisited. I originally covered Crystal's story back in February of 2016, but have expanded upon it significantly, and have rewritten/rerecording everything.Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.me/ If you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a PatronMusic CreditsJoao Picoito - "Third Floor"Rest You Sleeping Giant - "Dead Waters"ROZKOL - "Last Train in the Station"Graham Bole - "Nae Shaam"Borrtex - "Going Undercover"Blear Moon - "Cold Summer Landscape"Parvus Decree - "Subway Reflections"ROZKOL - "Spiders Web"Borrtex - "There Is Always A Reason"Kai Engel - "Soli"ROZKOL - "Burn It All Down"Other music created and composed by Ailsa TravesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.
