If you have been here since day 1, you know we did a podcast with Qiao Wang in 2020 shortly after DeFi summer. What a time to be alive. In todays podcast, we cover a variety of topics, including cross-border payments using stablecoins, the differences between Ethereum and Solana, the significance of L2s, Solana's upcoming upgrade Firedancer, his take on modular vs. monolithic, the state of private markets, the infra vs. dApp investing thesis, and Qiao's thoughts on the 4-year cycle. This was a really good refresher from a DeFi OG and someone who we really respect and look up to in the space. Restaking has grown significantly in the EVM land mindshare, yet people don't realize Cosmos has had restaking for a very long time. Liquid staking has also grown significantly in Cosmos thanks to help of several key players. Today, we'll explore the solutions Persistence One has to offer, and their recent launch of stkDYDX (liquid staked DYDX). The app chain philosophy of Cosmos allows for customization at the chain level, catering to specific needs and offering flexibility in validator selection. In this episode, we discussed the convergence of Cosmos and Ethereum, emphasizing Cosmos' pioneering concepts like IBC and chain abstraction. We also talked about the challenges faced by Cosmos in building network effects and ecosystems across its multiple chains were candidly addressed, providing a balanced perspective on the platform's growth. Moving on to Persistence, we touched on Persistence's focus on building an ecosystem for liquid staking tokens and its introduction of liquid staking in Cosmos, showcasing their commitment to innovation within the Cosmos network since day 1. We then delved into the differences in staking behavior between Cosmos and Ethereum as well as the challenges and trade-offs in the Cosmos ecosystem. There is > $100M of value being extracted every single year from lending markets by MEV. This value is shared with Ethereum validators, yet makes a small difference in the staking yield... In today’s pod, we'll explore how UMA is planning to recapture this value and distribute it to a different set of users. We discuss how integrating MEV modules, particularly Oval, into different protocols can recapture tons of value. Oval focuses solely on MEV capture, running auctions that allow users to bid to back run lending market Oracle updates and redirect a significant portion of the MEV back to the protocol and Chainlink itself. UMA's involvement takes center stage as we highlight its role in facilitating the integration of Oval into existing protocols, such as Aave, in a phased and conservative manner. We also touch upon revenue distribution models and tokenholder incentives, emphasizing the potential benefits for the loyal holders of UMA, Aave, Compound, and Chainlink. Finally, towards the end we talk about intents in the cross-chain landscape and where Hart sees this going in the future. The future is Modular. With the rise of specialized solutions in the blockchain development landscape, we will see more onboarding of devs and better UX for users. In today's podcast we talk with Dino, co-founder of Fluent, a company that is spearheading the development of a zkWasm L2. One of the key aspects of Fluent's platform is its support for two distinct categories of applications: shared apps and sovereign apps. This versatility is made possible through their FluentBase framework, which empowers developers to build standalone custom state machines and applications, allowing for a ton of epic use cases onchain. Furthermore, Fluent's vision extends beyond its own chain, as the team aims to seamlessly facilitate the deployment of innovative sovereign apps 'under the Fluent umbrella' so to speak. In addition to their technical prowess, Fluent is dedicated to inspiring developers to engage with their platform by providing incentives and aligning with market needs. Their emphasis on value accrual and the belief that providing valuable functions is NOT a race to the bottom as some have been saying in the modular stack. With a focus on modularity and a public testnet recently announced, Fluent is poised to play a strong role in the modular thesis. Change is coming. The era of centralized rollup sequencers is coming to an abrupt halt as builders realize the importance of a shared, decentralized sequencer network to power their censorship-resistant, minimized rollup infrastructure. In today's podcast, we sit down with co-founder of Espresso Systems, Charles Liu, to discuss the possibilities of rollup interoperability and the modular stack using Espresso's sequencer network. We are quite bullish on this movement as the modular rollup thesis continues to push on. Berachain is real. With takeaways from this podcast such as "your community is actually like a set of offchain validators" and unpacking what "proof of liquidity" really means, we really enjoyed the deep dive with Smokey. We think Berachain is onto something special, with its focus on fostering an authentic community, and redefining liquidity through their innovative proof of liquidity mechanism. The recent testnet has been an absolute success with a ton of usage and demand from users who have been patiently waiting for berachain. In this podcast we discuss the two token design, the distribution of block rewards, the influence of community 'validators', the benefits for BGT holders, and where Smokey sees their team pushing towards.
