Specialized Aethos 2, next-gen Shimano pedals leaked, UCI cost caps and more…

In this week’s BikeRadar news podcast, Jack Luke is once again joined by Simon von Bromley to discuss the latest hot stories in bike tech. We kick things off with a Shimano leak that suggests the Japanese brand may be working on a set of power meter pedals for its next generation road groupsets. Next, we move on to the new Specialized Aethos 2, which has been updated to include full integrated cable routing, wider tyre clearance and a less aggressive geometry. It’s also as light and expensive as ever, of course. We also discuss Tadej Pogačar’s tricked-out Colnago Y1Rs from the Rwanda world championships, and speculate why the Slovenian rider switched to Continental’s new Archetype tyres for this race. Finally, instead of ending with a ‘rant of the week’, Simon and Jack give a rare shoutout to the UCI for its recently announced cost cap for track cycling bikes and equipment, which will be introduced ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics Games in 2028. I've spotted an unreleased Shimano pedal system – and it looks like the product we've been waiting … The Aethos 2 is the lightest production bike Specialized has ever made at 5.98kg UCI announces price caps for 2028 Olympic track bikes and equipment Tadej Pogačar's tricked-out Colnago Y1Rs for the Rwanda World Championships – new tyres, custom whe… Learn more about your ad choices. Campagnolo is out of the WorldTour – what now?

Campagnolo, the iconic Italian groupset manufacturer, isn’t sponsoring a WorldTour professional team in 2024.   Do Campagnolo’s groupsets and components simply perform worse than those from Shimano and SRAM? Or could commercial considerations have driven Campagnolo’s exit from cycling’s elite road racing calendar?   With the new season now under way, Simon von Bromley and Oscar Huckle discuss the possible reasons behind this decline and how Campagnolo might turn things around. New Specialized Aethos, Giant TCR and Canyon Aeroad? 8 new road bikes we could see in 2024

Following our overview of predicted MTB launches, Jack Luke and Simon von Bromley run through eight road bikes we think may be launched this year.  Cyclical development and release schedules enable us to make some fairly solid predictions. 2024 is also an Olympic year, so any brand gets two juicy munches out of the marketing cherry, significantly increasing the likelihood of new bike launches. Our gossip geeks also discuss whether consumer tastes or convergent design philosophies drive progress, the one thing Simon would change about the Canyon Aeroad and the future of material science in cycling.  WorldTour tech gossip podcast: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5htzhlgH18Un0WKk1QnBjv  Learn more about your ad choices. It’s also an Olympic year, and so perhaps we’ll see a few new XC race bikes propped up in the pits as the season starts, ready for a full release as the Paris Games get a little closer.   Learn more about your ad choices.
