The Potter and The Clay | Romans Chapter 9 | Missionary Joe Consford

Today, we open one of the most challenging and breathtaking chapters in the Bible: Romans chapter 9. This passage confronts us with the sovereignty of God—His mercy, His justice, and His absolute right as the Potter to shape our lives as He wills. It’s a chapter that humbles us and calls us to trust in His purposes, even when we don’t understand them. Scripture Reading – Romans 9 (KJV) We’ll read through the entire chapter together, letting the Word of God speak in its fullness. From Paul’s sorrow for Israel to the bold declaration that salvation is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God who showeth mercy—Romans 9 reveals the greatness of our God. Storytelling Years ago in West Africa, I stood in a village where women shaped pots out of clay. The heat was heavy, their hands covered in mud, yet every motion had purpose. One woman pressed down on a lump of clay until it collapsed, then splashed water and began again. Another shaped a tall jar, but halfway through, she smashed it flat without hesitation. Nobody gasped. Everyone knew—the potter decides. That moment brought Romans 9 to life. “Hath not the potter power over the clay?” The clay didn’t argue. It couldn’t demand to become a vase instead of a cooking pot. Its destiny was in the potter’s hands alone. And then came the shiver-inducing moment: the woman held up a finished pot and smiled, “This one will carry water for the whole family.” But pointing to a discarded piece she added, “That one was no good.” It was a living parable. God is the Potter. We are the clay. Pharaoh was raised up to display God’s power. Jacob was chosen, Esau was not—before either had done good or evil. That truth is humbling, terrifying, and comforting all at once. Reflection Romans 9 forces us to wrestle with hard questions:
  • Do I trust God’s authority over my life?
  • Am I willing to accept that His purposes may look different from mine?
  • Will I rest in His mercy, knowing He is always just and never wrong?
This chapter reminds us that our place is not to argue with the Potter, but to trust His hands. The comfort is this: His mercy endures, and His promises never fail. Outro – Building Excitement Romans 9 shows us God’s sovereignty in choosing vessels for His glory. But how does that connect to Jesus as our High Priest? Tomorrow, we’ll dive into Hebrews chapter 7, where we see Christ as the eternal Priest after the order of Melchizedek—a chapter that answers deep questions about salvation, intercession, and the better covenant. You don’t want to miss it!
