Ep. 18 The Simpleminded Society: Simplemindedness

In the first episode of our season entitled, "The Simpleminded Society," we argue that the question of truth should be elevated above the question of offense; we define simplemindedness; we provide several examples of it in contemporary society; we detail the way of the true philosopher; and we provide practical tips on how to overcome simplemindedness.

"One important lesson that I have learned, whether through success or failure, is that sometimes the truth, or at least what we subjectively perceive to be the truth, is inherently offensive, and there’s no way around it. You can slave—through blood, sweat, and tears—over how to express the idea in question in the most sensitive way possible; you can express the idea in the most respectful, humble, nuanced, gentile, and amicable manner imaginable—and the idea will still be offensive, at least to some. Some truths, some ideas, are simply inherently offensive."

About Ryan, Host of Thinker Sensitive:

Ryan Ragozine is the host of Thinker Sensitive. He is passionate about ecumenical dialogue, inter-religious dialogue, and worldview engagement. He is a major proponent of civil discourse, free thinking, free speech, and ethical communication. Ryan has always been preoccupied with big ideas and big questions. He holds a B.A. in Theology and an M.A. in Philosophy. While in seminary, Ryan had the privilege of studying under Michael Peterson, editor and author of several philosophy of religion texts published by Cambridge, Oxford, and the University of Notre Dame—most notably in the subcategories of religion and science, the problem of evil, and C.S. Lewis scholarship. Ryan and his wife are huge advocates of Christian hospitality, running a house church that welcomed people from all different backgrounds and belief systems for about five years before eventually taking over at Thinker Sensitive.
