We Choose Our Responses & They Define Our Lived Experience w/ Yale Director of Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett

“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. Looking at the mental health stats these days, I don’t think this perspective is working. This is the conversation you’re about to hear with Marc Brackett. Marc previously authored the bestselling book, Permission To Feel and most recently, along with Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann, Marc and his team co-created the Apple award-winning app, HowWeFeel, that was designed to teach emotion skills and enhance well-being. 466: Hero, a message every man needs to hear – Dr. Meg Meeker

Dr. Meg Meeker says, “In a culture that lauds mothers as the parental heads of the house, the role of fathers has become inappropriately minimized—and in some cases even ridiculed. Fathers need to see themselves the way their children see them, You are, whether you know it or not, the center of their world, the hub of the wheel that is your family, the hero they depend on. If you’re not there or not engaged, they suffer.” Those are significant statements and it’s what we dig into in this interview, along with, “Three questions your child needs you to answer”. 464: How being kind actually makes you happier – Shaunti Feldhahn

Shaunti Feldhahn is a Harvard University grad and was an analyst on Wall Street before unexpectedly becoming a social researcher, best-selling author, and popular speaker. Today, she uses her analytical skills to investigate life-changing truths about relationships. Her new, groundbreaking research-based book, “The Kindness Challenge – Thirty Days To Improve Any Relationship” delivers this evidence: Whether we thrive depends far more on how we choose to treat others than on how we ourselves are treated. The path to our happy place starts with one choice: whether or not to be kind. Especially when we really don’t want to be. This is a message you can take action on today. 462: Expectation hangover – Christine Hassler

Christine Hassler brings us guidance on how to deal with disappointment on the emotional, mental, behavioral and spiritual levels in her book, “Expectation Hangover” – Free yourself from your past, change your present & get what you really want. We led into the interview from a statement Christine gave us, “To have true, aligned and lasting performance, we need to be connected to the TRUTH of who we are. We need to let go of limited self-beliefs, turn down the voice of the inner critic, drop masks of who we think we are “supposed” to be and agendas of what we think we “should” do.” Sounds very Ziglaresque, wouldn’t you say?! We cover issues such as, ““We all face setbacks we cannot control, yet we often forget that we have a choice about how to handle those setbacks.” As well as, “Managing your expectations is not about lowering your standards.” This was a powerful and eye opening interview that provides relevant value to everyone. Guaranteed. Thanks to Varidesk, Constant Contact, ZipRecruiter, and Capterra for this support of this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

461: How to get preferential treatment

461: How to get preferential treatment

Zig Ziglar is about doing the right thing. He also…liked nice things and was unabashed about his desire to be successful and appreciating what money could buy. We can have what he had, all the success and trappings, if we’ll do what he did. Which was, “help other people get what they want.” It’s right, it’s Christ-like, and it pays off in dramatic fashion! But, it’s a massive paradigm shift. It truly is and you probably have not grasped the gravity of it. Dive in with us, this is deep water. Deep water that holds riches.
