We Choose Our Responses & They Define Our Lived Experience w/ Yale Director of Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett

“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. You often think we are fulfilling desires, but it’s been well proven that our greatest and primary motivators are problems. And I’m going to help you look at some so-called desires and show how they are really problems we want to solve. Think specifically about where you spend your money, and you’ll find it’s primarily for problems you want to solve. Even with entertainment, are you fulfilling a desire, or are you solving the problem of boredom? The problem of anxiety and worry you want to escape? In this episode I'm going to confess how something I thought was a great strength, revealed itself as a weakness. And I see it so often with people who are more aware of themselves and concepts of healthy relating. They have learned not to react emotionally toward other people. They can regulate their behavior and in essence, bite their tongues. This can be good for not exacerbating a conflict in the moment. But the question is...what is it doing to us internally? I'm finding over time it can tear us down and even the concepts of healthfully responding and even journaling about it can very often miss the point of resolution and resilience and ultimately leave us in a weakened state.
