James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has officially become the sixth movie ever to cross the $2 billion mark worldwide. It is also the filmmaker’s third to hit the milestone, alongside Titanic and the original Avatar. The sequel grossed $2.024B globally and $1.426B from overseas turnstiles. It has become the No. 4 title of all time overseas, jumping past Avengers: Infinity War and behind only Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and Titanic. This gives Cameron bragging rights to three of the top four movies ever at the international box office. It has also grossed $227M from IMAX, overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the 2nd highest-grossing movie in the format’s history. Actor Jeremy Renner, who stars in the Marvel series Hawkeye, has provided an update on his recovery from a snow-plowing accident that left him with over 30 broken bones. He took to Twitter to thank his fans for their messages and appreciation, and to let them know that he will recover from his injuries. He also showed a sense of humor in response to a tweet from Captain America actor Chris Evans. The accident occurred on January 1st, as Renner was trying to help a family member who was stuck in the snow and was run over by his own vehicle. The stunt team behind the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series, "Skeleton Crew," has confirmed that filming has wrapped up and the series is set to premiere later this year. The series is an Amblin/Spielberg-like coming-of-age story about a group of kids lost in space around the same timeframe as The Mandalorian, with not much more information about the series has been released. The series was first announced by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau at Star Wars Celebration 2022 and creator Jon Watts has described it as "the story of their journey trying to find their way home." Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick series, will direct Michael B. Jordan in the Tom Clancy sequel Rainbow Six, which will be a follow-up to 2021’s Without Remorse. Jordan will reprise his role as Navy SEAL and CIA operative John Clark, who has appeared in numerous Tom Clancy novels. The movie will adapt from the same novels that Ubisoft has based its video game series on. Stahelski will direct the movie and has become one of the best action directors in Hollywood. Without Remorse was an origin story for Jordan’s portrayal of Clark and was released on Amazon during the pandemic. However, Rainbow Six is expected to be released in theaters. Stahelski is also involved in a remake of Highlander and will produce the John Wick spinoff Ballerina. Late-night host Stephen Colbert has partnered with Skybound Entertainment and Vincent Newman Entertainment to develop a TV series based on Roger Zelazny’s The Chronicles of Amber, a fantasy series first published in 1970. The story follows a young man named Corwin, who has the ability to travel through different dimensions of reality and rules over the one true world, Amber. Fantasy author George R.R. Martin has expressed his desire for the series to be adapted for the screen for years and is not involved in the project. The European Parliament voted to adopt a report calling for the European Commission to address several issues in the games industry that it believes will better protect consumers, especially young people. The report was led by MEP Adriana Maldonado López and made more than a dozen recommendations, including harmonized rules across the European Union’s single market when providing clear information about games content and systems that help parents understand and control how much time and money their children spend on games. The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) age rating system was highlighted as an example of something that could deliver more transparent information about the content, target age group, and in-game purchase options to consumers. They also call for developers to “avoid designing games that feed an addiction,” and other actions recommended include prioritizing data protection, improving the gender imbalance in the industry’s workforce, and making it as easy for consumers to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up. The European Parliament also recognized the value of the video games sector, as well as its potential to help with education, mental health, and other aspects of life. A new report from Avatar News suggests that Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the world being built by Avatar Studios are related and that Netflix has the rights to adapt the characters and story of the show. Ubisoft has updated its strategy for the near future, and in a new statement, has revealed that it has canceled three unannounced games and has delayed Skull and Bones yet again. Attributing this leaner focus on “major challenges” and an industry that it says is shifting towards “mega-brands and long-lasting titles,” Ubisoft says that its recent launches have not performed as well as expected. The company will now focus more of its efforts on building its current brands and live service titles and has revised its Q3 2022-23 net bookings target, which it now expects to reach approximately $779 million versus its prior target of approximately $831 million.
